I don't think it's worth your while to move down there from the US. You already live in a first world country and got a nice climate in Florida.
From what I have heard, there are some issues with unemployment and a weak dollar down there.
If you want to see what it's like to live there, apply for a work permit, chill there for a bit and if you set yourself up nicely, you can always apply for citizenship.
Another thing I would be worried about is anti-American sentiment. An American friend of mine experienced it in Australia. I am not sure how it is in NZ.
These are just some things to think about before becoming a citizen, with all the rights and RESPONSIBILITIES, of another nation.

    I totally Agree
    with FiReSTaRT.

Apply for a workholiday visa and look arround for a year.

Besids applying for a citizenship you need to have a PR first ( permanten residency)
like in the US a "Green Card" .

A few valid points but most is not correct.

    Apply for residency first.
We are not Australia and I know of know anti US sentiments.

    Technically we are very advanced.

You can go on holiday and leaving your house unlocked and it will all be there when you return.

i'm guessing it won't be too hard to get a work permit with a BA in math, and it seems like i have to anyway, as someone pointed out, to establish residency for something like five years before i can even apply. i checked wikipedia, and based on 2005 estimates, their rate of unemployment is lower than ours. they have a much lower per capita income, but you're talking to a guy who's been living on 6000 dollars per year for waaayy too long. i also found out that their public health system has its problems, but i don't have any insurance, so, again, just about anything would be a step up. has anyone ever visited? impressions?

The public health system is free for all accidents and emergencies etc..nothing wrong with it. Even ambulances are free.

You can have personal medical insurance for elective surgery.

Income is relative to the country you live in. I have a very nice lifestyle but my income would not support me in Europe etc..but then I don't live there.

Any one in technology, medical, engineering, sciences etc is an almost definite. If you have a criminal record though....forget it.

ps I was born in London, have travelled and worked all over the world and even if I won lotto I would choose to live in NZ. A great place for kids to grow up too.

this is what got me thinking...

    http://gulfster.com/IndexFiles/NewZealand.html

the guy who went (the idiot with the soul patch) is a sort-of buddy of mine and he tells me amazing stories about the place. america has its pros and cons, but lately the cons are starting to weigh more heavily (but please don't lets start any flaming; if you want to hear my point of view, send me a pm and we can duke it out there).

gary, do you know if new zealand treats its teachers all that well, and if they need them as badly as they do here in the states (really bad in the case of math/sciences)?

Teachers are desparately needed. By from what I understand it's the same all over the world. Over worked and under paid.
