Well I see I'm suppose to see this monster on Sunday morning... great :dropjaw:
Anyone else getting ready for this monster?
Man I wish everyone a safe next few days as it looks like the weathermen may have gotten this one right...

Wow. Stay safe you blokes that are in the path of that. Don't do anything silly.

Lifelong Floridian here. The brunt of Irene is dodging us but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before one hits the state somewhere.
Don't be worried, Cat 3 hurricanes arent much unless you happen to live under sea level and have decades of corruption undermining your infrastructure. I've been through about ten hurricanes and the most danger I've ever been in during one was when I almost got in a fight with a really big guy during a hurricane party.
Yep, the storm's on a beeline for my location (central Massachusetts). I expect tons of rain and high winds. Other than trees going down... Anyway, we'll know on Monday a.m.
She might come right up the Chesapeake, if so things may get really wet here in DC. The stores here were mobbed even yesterday.
We're pretty much assured to get hit. How hard remains to be seen. I'm in northwestern NJ.
Central NJ checking in, looks like we will be getting it pretty good mandatory evacuations for those on the island and voluntary for those on the bay side. You know things are getting serious when they are suspending tolls on the parkway.
Edit: they just said that parkway will be closed southbound at 8pm tonight south of Exit 98 (little below mid-state) as is eastbound travel onto barrier islands. Seems like a pretty big deal.
I'm glued to the news right now, hoping to buy a few things before I head home tonight. I'm hoping to have fun as long as no one gets hurt. I always enjoy seeing mother nature in full force, kind of a reminder of how small we really are, a good ego check once in a while is good for the brain PROVIDED no one gets hurt.
just to the west of boston right here. i'm actually looking forward to a relaxing weekend inside, catch up on some netflix and books. just hope nothing happens to my car!
I'm in the tropical storm warning area just SW of DC, but after having sat through dozens of 'canes on the Outer Banks of NC it's only fun until the power goes off.
Then you're sitting in the dark wondering if the next thing that blows off your neighbor's house is going to come right through yours - while a storm the size of Texas roars just outside those walls, that until now, seemed pretty safe.
If the last time your house was hit with 100mph+ winds and 10 inches of rain fell in 6 hours and you made out ok... you'll probably be ok. If you haven't been there and still want to roll the dice... good luck.
I can tell you this much - when it hits you won't be reading a book or watching Netflix - you'll be wondering where those adult diapers are.
I live in a brick and concrete apartment building designated as a nuclear shelter due to the thickness of the walls, but that says nothing of the windows. West 172nd Street, New York, NY 10032 - Google Maps
tonycraigo you are probably 110% correct, I'm going to be soiling myself and praying from the basement of my house. the book and netflix are my wishful thinking. thanks for the reality check though and good luck to you!
No one in the path of this thing is safe, but I'm fairly confident my location will be spared the worst of the damage. I'm keeping in close contact with my friends on Hatteras, but I know what they'll be going through by first light tomorrow morning. If I still lived there I'd be going through it with them. The structures there are designed to stand up to cats 2/3, but at 4s only fools shelter in place.
Still, with this storm soundside flooding will be the killer 'cause she's coming right up Pamlico Sound and I fully expect she'll kill.
The tracking data suggests a cat1 at landfall for NY and at first glance that doesn't sound that bad until you realize a cat1 is 75-90 mph winds... and that's sustained winds... gusts to 120 are the norm. Then you'll wonder where all that water is coming from because when you look out the window it's all going sideways!
Anyway... if you're under the gun for Irene's strike, take care. This one will likely set the pucker factor standard for those that have never experienced this level of mother natures wrath.
Wishing those of you in Irene's path all the best. You are in our thoughts & prayers.
Make sure you have some emergency lighting and keep those straights dry.
We'll hear from you on the other side of the storm.
I'm not a twit, but the father of a friend is a meteorologist and this is his Twitter feed: https://mobile.twitter.com/#!/WeathermanDC . If memory serves correctly he works for NOAA. He hasnt steered me wrong on snow storms for my ski bum alter ego.
Here's a thread on my fishing forum we've dedicated to Irene: Hurricane Irene
The early posts were.. well... early... and now we're getting into the meat of the storm on Hatteras. I'll be in contact with my dear freinds "Captain Jim and Sharin" through the day. They live 100' from Pamlico Sound in Frisco, NC in a sturdy dwelling on 12 feet of pressure treated stilts (if you've ever been there you know the drill).
Ya'll are welcome to follow along, register and join in if you like... we're a friendly bunch... :)
Buxton's reading 50 sustained and gusts to 70 out of the E.SE at this posting.... nothing out of the ordinary for the moment.
The offshore bouy out of Hatteras is at 35 feet. A bit sporty... oops... Diamond Shoals bouy just went down... which indicates she's been destroyed... again... Maybe just dragged under. National Data Buoy Center
Diamond Shoals is a bit like the surface of Venus. They don't call it the 'Graveyard Of The Atlantic' for nothin'...
Outer Banks Trivia: Diamond Shoals tower was actually a structure - like an offshore oil platform - that the US Coast Guard (Hatteras) used to man. The guys would live out there on long swing shifts and relay data by radio back to Coast Guard Group Hatteras. It lived for decades and another of my very dear friends and neighbors used to BE one of those guys that manned it in his youth.
When I was fishing for a living out of Hatteras the tower used to be a real hot spot, but she hadn't been manned for a long time and was very rusty. She either still stands or she doesn't... haven't talked to Leon in a while.
In those days the data didn't go down due to a little storm.
Anyway... here ends the trivia lesson.

Just wishing all the guys in the path of Irene all the best and hoping that everyone stays safe with minimal damage.
We know about natural disasters after the past 12 months here in Australia and wouldn't wish it on anyone else.
We are thinking of you
ugh... this looks just... not good
It was pretty much a non event here. Some rain and wind. I hope others get the same treatment.
RT 12 - the only road on Hatteras Island was breached in at least one place. Flooding has been described as 'Epic' - for whatever that's worth.
'Epic' flooding breaches Outer Banks highway :: WRAL.com
From what I can gather at this time Villages of Avon and Rhodanthe got pretty wet, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras not so much. Still it appears Hatteras might be cut off for a while.
Relatively calm for me last night, more wind than rain today. What a light show coming from Jersey though, must've been power lines bursting? Didn't seem like lightning from my vantage point. Biggest inconvenience? No 3G access tonight. I'm very grateful. I hope everyone else did as well
yea att phone service is down.. but i lost power just on and of a few times.
Lots of trees down... BIG trees that wiped out power and phones lines everywhere.
Bassguy.. I saw some pretty nasty pics from downtown where water was pretty high in the streets.
Great picture tho...
Ok, now I'm starting to worry.
jmbbabson hasn't checked in, and I've not heard from Jim and Sharin on Hatteras Island since Saturday Morning. All cell calls are pumped immediately to Vmail and two of the four websites that post daily fishing reports haven't posted... the other two are down.
I know the road is severed in a few places, but storms much more severe than this last one has never resulted in this much lack of communication.
I lived there for years... I know they're doing what they always do... and it's only because I'm not there doing it with them that really irks me 'cause they can't tell me what they're doing... lol.
I'll bet the fishing is epic!
At least I know they're eating well. :)
Here's something to watch while we wait...

sorry i didn't check in earlier guys! it was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it got up here so it was just a pretty good rainstorm which turned into lots of wind up here west of boston. lots of trees and debris down in some places and major power outtages across the state. monday morning had 500,000+ people without power. we were without power for about 12 hours on sunday but it came back before monday morning
glad to hear everyone seems to be ok
Jersey has some serious flooding from the rivers. The water levels here in NJ broke records so we are still dealing with that. My house was fine lost power for only a moment and had no water problems.
The serious part of Mother Nature is that when you take her for granted, she'll bite your ass everytime. Better prepared than not.
Hope all is well.
Thank you. I had to turn off the Today Show this morning when they got to their ridiculous segment about "Was Irene over-hyped" and "Were evacuations necessary?"
Maybe I'm a little more passionate about that subject as a Floridian who was in Ft. Lauderdale during Andrew, but still; of all the catastrophic disasters, hurricanes probably offer the most warning. Flippin' heed it and be thankful if it just winds up being an inconvenience.
Glad to hear all of our affected SRP members reporting in.
I finally got my power back on yesterday evening. It was out a whole week and some others still don't have theirs back.
