So that leaves the crowd. Which makes sense. The sniper is there to take out any urgent threat coming from, or going towards the crowd.

According to the few reports I read online a few minutes ago, the rifles and gear were there as an advertisement for an equipment company before the game. I'm not sure I buy that though either! But it makes more sense than having loaded guns manned over the crowd for a superbowl game

I'm sort of with you, hoglahoo, on this one.
I think this was a staged photo shot for the rifle manufacturer. But, I have been wrong many times before. I have never been sniper trained, so maybe we have a current or past sniper on this forum that can answer these couple of questions:
How would he get that shot down range considering the stairwell that the rifle is placed in is "sealed/enclosed" in a thick glass or polymer? I don't see a portal?
Would a sniper take such a visible position that could be seen from any number of fans, who for sure will have their binoculars trained on all the areas of the stadium, enjoying the sights? I could imagine someone starting a panic down below after spotting the setup.

Anyway, it's an interesting photo. Thanks for posting it.

I don't think it was a staged photo for the manufacturer, they might be saying it was to keep the masses calm. But when you consider how many high profile people were in attendence and the fact the the area around the stadium was a "no-fly" zone for the day, one has to wonder. As for the possibilty of being seen, who's to say the "glass" the sniper is behind does not have a reflective coating on it to remain "invisible" and is in an area where the general public has no access? I am also guessing there were probably a few other such positions at the stadium.

Didn't mean to detract from the M24 discussion. :) There was speculation that the photos were faked when first released but it has since been confirmed to be real. As Lee posted upthread, the photos were released to the public by the tripod's maker through U.S. Tactical Supply to show off the tripod. The setup was absolutely there during the game for an Indianapolis SWAT team sniper, who watched through binoculars.

Yep, everyone always thinks it is all fun, until they have to "glass" for hours on end.... It's funny everyone thought sniping was a sucky job until the war..... Now the job is totally romatisized... Although inaccurate, I am glad we finally get somes kudos out there.

I suppose it has its pros and cons.
One of the obvious advantages to being a sniper is that you're not the guy kicking in doors, wondering what's on the other side, or whether an ied is going to blow your legs away when you turn the corner.Otoh, I suppose that it is mentally very taxing. Also, it is maybe easier shooting someone who is actively threatening you, vs shooting someone who might just be standing there, unaware.

No disrespect intended if I am wrong of course. It's just how it seems to me as an outsider.

I sincerely hope that was made in jest. I deleted my first response before posting it and came back later with my initial response.

After letting a few days pass I'm still trying to apply one of the mottoes of my conflict "it don't mean nothin' ".

Nam vets had a bad reputation and some of it was deserved, a lot more of it wasn't.

I for one and DAMN proud of the young men and women who are serving today and have served since that mess in SE Asia. I hope NONE of them are ever spit on and called baby killers in an airport like we were.
