I just returned from San Francisco where mini kilts are very popular in the Castro district(where men are men and the sheep are nervious)

The original kilt was a long piece of wool that was wrapped around yourself several times and then over the shoulder. It functioned as kilt, cloak, sleeping bag, etc.

I don't know about the rivers thing. That is why ghillie brogues were invented, though.

Well, we *were* naive Aussie tourists - maybe we were spun a yarn, but it made sense at the time...:thinking:

Yes, there's a similar fashion in parts of Sydney too (and I'm not talking about nervous sheep - for nervous sheep you need to go a bit further inland...)

I have a couple of utilikilts (workman and survival models) and wear them frequently in the warm weather.

Only ran into trouble once, with a gang of teenagers. I was with my wife and elderly (72 Years old) inlaws. When things started to get ugly I confronted the gang and they decided to leave. I ended up filing a police report on that one. Most of the time there is no problem and people are quite gracious and interested in the garment. Many women especially seem to have a peculiar curiosity about the kilt and what's under it.

I either read or saw on tv recently an interesting theory that the march of civilisation, the technological revolution, etc. is all just about impressing women. Funny, although quite sexist if you think about it...

This is what I got married in, Im in the middle sided by my younger brothers, we are wearing Johnston Tartan from my mothers side....

do you still wear kilts right now in everyday life coully?

Everyday life? Not really...as someone has said before, it is more worn on formal occassions, however in some of the larger cities...you do see people wearing them everyday, and not just for the tourists.

I have more than 1 kilt. Two of them are traditional tartan, and one is made of a heavyweight denim....not utility. I am very comfortably wearing it whenever i take a notion to, perhaps most of all when I am in the USA.

I hope to add a black 3 piece kilt suit to my collection soon, and I imagine I will wear it whenever a conventional suit would be appropriate. Besides....there's nothing funnier than watching a drunk guy using a urinal whilst wearing a kilt.
