Thread: Just bought a pocket knife...

I've been on the lookout for a good quality pocket knife recently. I like to keep a knife around the house since I don't like using the kitchen knives to open boxes and cut rope/string etc in the garden or garage. I also like a knife to take if I'm going out camping or walking in the forest - always useful to have along.

I used to own a handmade sheath knife designed by Ray Mears and made in England by Alan Wood, but I sold it recently on Ebay as the value had increased by a large degree due to the rarety of these - actually it paid for the Maestro I ordered.

Anyway I wanted to pick up a good quality folding knife, and have been perusing the Boker and Spyderco websites for 2 or 3 weeks trying to decide on one to go for. Then I happened to be looking at Classicshaving website this morning and noticed they have 4 Limited Edition handmade Thiers pocket knives, I'm not sure how long they've been on the website. Not only do they look to be very pretty, but if the description is to be believed they should be of very high quality too.

They have 4 different versions, but I ordered the one below. It looks like an absolute beauty!

I personally wouldn't pay that much for a pocket knife, though. I've carried the same one in my pocket for seven, going on eight years now, and the thing gets used. It was only twenty-five bucks when I bought it, so I was never afraid to use it, though.

I'd be afraid to do any cutting with your knife, for fear of ruining it.

Spyderco makes some really cool knives out of some very good exotic steels, though, I personally am not a fan of their designs. The designs are cool as hell, but not all as practical as other designs. As far as weight, feel and design go, I really like the Kershaw knives designed by ken onion. Really great stuff in my oppinion. Nice price range too, not to expensive that I have to worry around losing it or damaging it in use.

Looks like Lee Valley has got something pretty similar. This one's got African Ebony wood, though.

Iwan, your knife looks very nice, but be aware that with our tough knife laws it will be illegal to carry (because of the lock)

In the UK, you can only carry a sub 3" blade that is not capable of locking, and only then with a 'good reason'

Thats why Spyderco (with help from the contributors on Britishblades forum) designed the UK Pen knife.

I think it's a great little knife, Iwan. I wouldn't mind having one myself. Let me know how stout the blade is at the pivot. Seemed like it wasn't that long ago a person could get a complete custom for that price. Reminds me that I need to start making some knives again. My last batch was a year ago.

All the years I worked as a LEA I carried a benchmade auto with a 4 inch blade and when I retired I had to sell it because its illegal even here in the wild west. Now I carry a Camillus cuda max with a tallonite blade, lock back 5 1/2 inch blade and I'm never letting that go.

Now if someone could make me a straight with a tallonite blade that would be something!
