Or allow them to slug it out in a civil war? Under our protection, Iraq created a constitution that made them an Islamic theocracy. They also voted in a government to carry it out. At least theoretically they have a democracy, but what they'll really have depends on who wins. If it's the Shiites they'll have a miniature Iran, tied to Iran. If it's the Sunnis they'll probably have another dictatorship. The Kurds, in any case, seem to have a working, peaceful separate area. In any case, Al Qaeda controls Anbar Province, and our generals don't think we can take it back. So, they now have what they lost in Afghanistan, but htis time they're actually governing the area.
I still think the thing to do is to get the three parties talking to each other and redeploy to the edge of Kurdistan. At that point it's up to them. They can slaughter each other or work something out. In either case, our troops are out of harm's way in a friendly part of Iraq, and they're close enough to the action to protect against foreign intervention.
