Whats your opinion on automatic weapons?

Isnt this how America started? The British army was given orders to search for and confiscate guns, it did not matter wether or not it was a shopkeepers pistol or a farmers squirrel gun. The next thing ya know the shopkeepers and farmers are waiting for the British regulars at the bridge at Lexington. The rest is as they say....history.

IMO you should have done this in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and elsewhere, then the British govt would have no Commonwealth to fund and feed her wars. But then again this is why His/Her majesties instituted the Commonwealth, to give the illusion of autonomy, pre empting any further need of revolution among any other colonial settlements. I am not bashing here, I am simply showing historical references.

The British Commonwealth of Nations was founded in 1931. Note the word nations not colonies. Just what wars were you referring to, WWII? I sometimes wonder about Americans grasp of history not directly connected to the US. Canada did not automatically go to war when Britain declared war on Germany 03 Sept. 1939 but had a Parliamentary debate and vote declaring on 10 Sept. 1939. There is a whole wonderful world out there to properly explore not centered on the US.

Just to be clear I would love to legally own a full auto firearm, the preferred one would be be FG42 followed by an MG34. In answer to the original question.

Wouldn't you rather have: a country with lower crime rates, a health service that is accessible to everyone, politicians that aren't bribed, some of the safest roads in the world, a police force that respects everyone and is on the scene in minutes, cellular phone networks that don't own you, prisons that actually prevent crime, ambulance service that is on scene in under 7 mins, nationalised education standards .... ... ... I wonder if some of your rights restrict these things. Our human rights act isn't perfect but it protects us. I wonder if the politicians weren't afraid of revolution if the country could move forward?

I think I speak for many people in that I have never thought of purchasing a gun, am not fascinated by them, was never in the military or law enforcement, don't know how to use one, don't hunt, or have seen a picture with the explanation "this is an automatic weapon." In an emergency I might hurt myself or some innocent person, but on the other hand I might save myself.

This is probably why the subject goes back and forth without going anywhere. You have law enforcement people on one side trying to protect both us and each other, and you have gun enthusiasts on the other side who are knowledgeable and pose no threat. The rest of us are in the middle, not really knowing who is more right. Occasionally people who usually don't have firearms are touched personally by a tragic incident and develop an opinion based on that experience.

The question is, what should the average person with no particular interest in firearms need? If you need a firearm, I'd also say you need some experience using it.

With respect to CaliforniaCajun, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Why not have that and the guns? The guns didn't cause the US social problems. What caused them was the way the society is structured and their firm belief in "it will trickle down, the rich shouldn't be paying taxes, only what's left of the middle class should". And no, I don't blame the immigrants, the terrorizer or the "mysterious" economy that the most powerful nation in the world can't control.
