Well Carl, they're houseboats here as well. Those on Englebright would go as small, I would say. Some are crazy huge. Oddly enough, still called houseboats. Personally, I feel once they get over two stories tall, and have waterslides, and a floating trampoline behind them. They should be called something else. There's a couple up at lake Oroville that are monsters. I'll post a couple pics. I've had a blast on a couple of them, small ones, owned my friends who aren't zillionares. I've seen shows with some of them back in like Tennessee and Kentucky that are crazy, like a mansion that floats. Whatever, gimme a innertube and a cold beer and I'll be in hog heaven!!

Can I say 'obscene'? Can I call them obscene? I'm going to say 'crass' and 'tacky' as well...

We had a little trip up the Murray River a few years ago with my brother and sister in law, one of the best times of my life. I kept reminding everyone I'd done four and a half months on HMAS Westralia, the biggest ship in the Australian navy, and had driven it, so should be in charge (clearly). Here are some memories:

Looks like fun!! Were you on croc watch? Are there any around there? Anyway, the obscene houseboats, I wholeheartedly agree. It's not an envy thing, it's just, what the heck?? Whatever, it's their money! I'm not sure which one, and I'm not sure of the cost, but I had heard that one of them was made in Arkansas and trucked out here to the tune of over 100k just to get it here.

No not quite true Carl. Their trucks are smaller than ours, and they don't haul as many trailers as a general rule. I never saw a single road train...Sorely disappointed I was the first time I saw what looked to me like a bunch of Tonka trucks parked up at a roadhouse.

I, too would like Grazors Norton, and I would even go over to Un Zud and push the bugger all the way back to Australia to get it, if I thought I could get away with it without being caught. :)

Crocs can't survive in the Murray river due to the Murray Cod eating them. A two metre croc is just a snack for them ;).

Too true Mick. I don't have a scan of any of my road train pics (from trips in the army when we used to drive from Adelaide to Darwin straight up the middle) but I'm sure you do :-)

Actually I got nothin' Carl. Everytime I've thought to take a picture (on the rare times I bothered with a camera), I've either been too damn late with the camera, or the shot turned out too crappy for me to bother to keep.

They run these in Nevada, do they count? I've only been across Nevada once, decades ago. I had a truck pass me at night, he was doing around 85mph. The tractor went by, then the trailer, then the trailer, THEN; another trailer!!?? I'd never seen one before and it was pretty cool. The laws here for trucking vary from state to state on length, kingpin to axle, overall, and what not. I've spoken to those who made long haul trucking their living, and it's a nightmare for them. Some states you have to pay a road tax. Other states you have to pay road tax, or, buy fuel in their state. It's pretty wacky.

In Minnesota anyway, you can hitch a 5th wheel behind your truck and a boat behind that. I would hate to try to back that arrangement up.

I didn't see one of those when I was in Nevada myself, but that is, what we here in Australia call, a road train. So it is possible that you might have actual real fullsize trucks (Tractor if you prefer) instead of just those half size things I saw so many of. I could well be wrong! The size of the trucks I saw when I was over there, are considered small here, we have them, but they're in the minority.

Gotcha. Yeah, I know what you're talking about. One thing trucks here can't step around is weight restrictions. Before I'm admonished by someone around here, yes, certain occasions will allow certain loads to go over the road. I went to a parade over on the coast and they had a truck and trailer they use on their own roads for logging, it made regular trucks look small, but, they were not allowed on public roads. When they brought in the steam turbine at work, it came in on a huge set up. Huh, never thought to get any pictures.

Just got back from wilson sink reservoir,70 miles west of elko nev. way out in the sticks,I mean dirt roads for 30 miles..
you see those giant tandams all over I 80,never seen one in Kali.

Well what you've told me about regulations, road tolls and restrictions, I now understand why the US version of a truck is smaller. I was very surprised to see it first hand, as we here in Oz, are led to believe that everything is BIGGER in the US, and trucks in the movies seem BIGGER too. The reality of it not being so, hit home when I was over your part of the world all those years ago.

It's mostly American Propaganda. I'm not sure when it started, I'm guessing some time during the Industrial Revolution. Bigger was always deemed better! Even if two of something could do a job better, one big thing is better! Maybe it's more of a global thing than I think. I think it was a way to instill pride and motivate people. But, around here, (especially with rednecks), all you have to say is, "That's a pretty big ___ you have there Bob. But I saw Tom had the newer, bigger ___". Well, dollar to a donut, Bob will be looking to upgrade his ____! Up in Chico Ca, they do have something that's big and, IMHO, totally bitchin'!! The World's Largest functional yo yo! While at the store, Bird in Hand, just ask, and you may have someone there that can do some pretty cool stuff with a yo yo. One employee showed part of his routine that he used in the National Competition, way cool.

They have the National Yo Yo Competition in Chico every year. And, every year, I don't remember to go to it till a week after!! Here's a clip of a kid from last year. They are a little more advanced than the yoyo's I used. And, no, I don't think that having a different one would have done me much good!!

Now that's cool! I love yo-yo's, just don't ask me why. I can't do much with them. I would love to have a shop like that near me. So much choice...I would be suffering from Yyad.
As for big things, we have lots of big things. Unfortunatley most of them are huge, gawdy firbreglass monstrositys b the side of the road. Like the big Banana, the big Prawn, the big Orange, the big Elephant etc. I have no idea who thought up doing things like that, but I would like to meet them one day so I could, as you blokes say over there, Slap them upside of their head. :)

Mick, the yo-yo's you and I knew are dinosaurs now. A genius named Tom Kuhn brought them into the modern world. Ball bearings!! I was lucky to get my yo-yo to "sleep" long enough to do one quick trick. Now they spin on bearings, and have friction, clutch type plates in them. New is sometimes better. I know this may come to a some on this site as a shock, but, at least with yo-yo's, new is better. They can have my Duncan Butterfly back any day, gimme a Tom Kuhn No Jive.

Yes, it was just last year that the yo-yo fad came back in for it's usual two week duration for my oldest child. So of course i had to go out and get three yo-yo's. One for each of my children so that there would be no fights (There were anyway, and I should have foreseen it!). Well while I was looking for them, I was shocked first by the price of the cheapest ones. I never remembered them as costing much, and admittedly they still don't...Well, the cheapest ones don't, but they cost more now than they used to. I also had to get myself one :D and I thought I was going all out paying $15 for this you beaut thing with bearings and a clutch system, but what I've just seen blows that out of the water and kicks it in the guts for good measure! I just took a look at their online store. My lord what you can pay for a kids toy these days!

My Mexican buddy Paco was going to release some fish today, so I drove down and took a couple pictures. This is just South of Yuba City Ca on the Feather River. Little 8 inch salmon, spawned in the Hatchery in Oroville, and turned loose to try to make it past the Striped Bass on their way to the San Francisco Bay. If they make it to the Pacific Ocean, get bigger, they can come back up the river to Oroville and start the cycle over again. Good luck little fishies!!

not real pretty but today i went to a "polar bear club" jump in for charity. I'm no longer silly enough to do this the road sign had me concerned a bit. the last photo is a neighbor and her daughter who jumped together andin the middle is one of the kids who will benefit from the event.

I took the back way home the other day. The wild mustard is doing well, and saw some sandhill cranes. They were out a ways and walking away. They didn't know what I was up to, and kept turning their heads to give me the eye.

Number one son and I went for a ride yesterday up the hill to fetch a bottle of water. I thought it would be cool to get some fresh spring water to make tea, loaded up an empty five gallon water bottle and a one gallon jug. 33 miles later, and after a snow they had the day before we got the water. When we made it back home, I ended up with two gallons of water, the five gallon bottle had tipped over in my Toyota 4-Runner and had spilled. We did see one of my favorite houses and a fixer upper on the trip. Now, I'm going to open up the rig and try to dry things out!!

This is the remains of the first place i worked (summer of 1980) it has been closed and decaying since 2004 the village used the entrance way and front for friday night "socials" usually string quartet or local folk groups and ice cream until 2007 when it was becoming unstable.
