Holy crap!!! What did they build him out of!!?? Sure wasn't asbestos. Looks like they used asphalt shingles, glued together with cordite and napalm!! Over here, up on the North Coast, they have a big Paul Bunyon and his big blue ox, Babe. They used to have a dude inside the tourist trap that would watch people coming and he could talk, through Paul, to them. You know, like, "Hey, you in the yellow shirt, nice kids you have there", that kind of stuff. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but too bad they didn't have a guy for Tex!! I could hear it now, "Oh NO, NO NO NO, PLEASE SOMEONE HELP"!! Again, thanks for the pictures, the old house you took pictures of is way cool. I love old buildings, the craftsmanship, the high celings, the tall base boards. Crap, the porcelain door knobs I can sell here for twenty bucks a set, no problem. Heck, in the Bay Area, double it. Take care buddy, I'm going to the Portuguese Festa and bullfights tomorrow, camera will be in hand, I don't go South very often.
THE "voice of Big Tex" was unaware his toy was on fire.
I was thinking he could have had some great fun with it, but he stood outside and watched the fire with everyone else.
Most of that thing was fiberglass. OLD fiberglass.
These are all fine pics! Why didn't I find this sooner :)
Well I finally found the pictures... I really need to organize my photos a bit better.

Finally made it back to Mingus, TX today. Summer gig is pretty much done. Took care of the punch list today and sent the crew home. Doubt we ever see this particular contractor on this type gig again. Crews did good work for the most part. Management has some real issues. Stupid decisions have cost that company about $35K in liquidated damages that were charged for non performance. Oh well.
Meanwhile back in Mingus. As stated before, there isn't much to Mingus anymore. One church, a post office, a bank branch, two convenience/liquor stores and 5, that's right, FIVE bars. Those boys like their alcohol.
Old store.

It might say closed but did you go in and hab a look-see?
I knocked but nobody answered. ;)
I stay out of buildings that I don't have permission to enter.
The porch on that one looked very iffy and I didn't particularly want to step through it.
I would like to get into a lot of these old places, but better safe than sorry.
I went on a road trip yesterday to Thronton CA. Big Portuguese Festa over the weekend. I took some pictures of the parade, I'm having issues posting them. I also took some short videos of the Forcados at the bullfight. Also known as the suicide squad, they are something to watch. Hopefully this will post.

It's not fair just to show them in defeat. Here's their fourth try, they got it right this time.

Way cool! :)
I took a couple pics of some oxen pulling tiny wooden carts. After I post this, I'm gonna look up what the hell an ox is. I always thought they were just beef critters, without nuts, that instead of eatin' they let get big. These things are friggin' huge, and have nuts. Anyway, maybe the site will let me post them once the boogies are chased outa the lines. Got a good picture of a perfect John Deere Johnny Pop tractor too. It was cool to hear it run!

OK, Wullie, it let me post a few pictures. Oxen, John Deere and, a poor little first time heffer that needed to be milked. I think. If it don't come out, don't shoot the messenger!!
If you want to see more videos of the forcados, I just figured out, if you click on the youtube tab on the bottom right, then, you can click on my name on the upper left border, that will show the other videos I've posted. There were three teams, and I taped all their tries. Granted, I haven't posted them all yet, there are enough to satisfy your blood lust for a while. I'm not sure if tomorrow night will get rained out, hope not, but it hasn't rained here in over 130 days, we need it.

Well today I drove home and noted that my "hood" has started prepping for Halloween. It's huge here - here are the first two to get started.

This couple's house always looks like it's prepped for Halloween lol - it's very uh... Kansas.
Attachment 110156
Of coarse I had to take a shot of this guys house on my way home too. I can just hear it! Jimneny Cricket hon! How many times do I have to tell you who to vote for!? Seriously?! Here - I'll put up a post-it note of sorts so that you don't forget ok!! Sigh.

:) Wow.
That obama sign is funny. This neighborhood usually has its fair share of political signs posted in yards but this election not near as many except a few diehards. I think America is starting to figure it out. We are screwed.
Of course on my road trip this week I forgot my camera! I had my phone but T Mobile is giving me grief and I just got these two off it so far.
The first inspired by Wullie is particularly depressing to me. I helped build it from cutting trees and sawing boards with my father. Damn am I getting that old. :(

The second is the reason for the trip. My youngest son. 45 yards across a ditch and up hill with his bow. Heart shot. Very deceiving range. I would have guessed it closer to 60 and got my range finder out to verify it. The picture does not do justice to how steep it is. It ran a ways, tipped over and slid 20 yards down to that tree and after the picture he pulled it to the side and let it go to slide the rest of the way down. He was afraid to break the horns when it hit bottom. A wonderful trip with my son!

Wow that's something... new and old. A kind of changing of the guard as it were?
Found some old negatives the other day and the wife bought one of those things that will convert them to jpg files.
This is a "5 window" '54 First model Chevy 1/2 ton that I bought for a song because it was hard to start. It was a 6 volt and the previous owner had put a 12 volt starter on it. I gave 'em 800 bucks for it, push started it and drove it home. I pulled the starter off and took it back to NAPA and they swapped it out, no charge. :)
It had factory turn signals and a tube type AM radio that still worked!

It was my daily driver for two years.
One afternoon an ol boy offered me $3K cash and ride home for it. I took his money and the ride.
Kind of wish I still had the old beast.
Wow Wullie, I don't know if I should sing your praises for driving a vehicle for two years and then getting a cool $1,200 above what you paid for it... and a ride home! Or cry that you gave up on a classic.
You should have bought the little kit plane too lol!! Heck - with your luck you might have flown it for a couple of years and then made a cool 10K on that thing lol!!
I made $2200 on that old truck LOL. That little plane is what we lovingly referred to as the world's slowest airplane. It had about enough motor to get off the ground. The wing was WAY old school with a lot of under camber ( drag ). You had to fly the wing on that beast as it didn't have enough engine to get you out of a bind. It was fun, but I didn't want to own it. It was basically a Pietenpol "Air Camper"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pietenpol_Air_Camper
on steroids as the builder made it bigger than the original plans yet kept the engine size the same..... It had a 65HP Continental on it.
This is what I miss in our world now a days.
. One of Pietenpol's goals was to create a plane that was affordable and easy to construct for home builders.
I can see the argument why, but people are getting so specialized that there is no way there is a home builder.
Tim
My wife fly's Tim and I think you are right. Especially if you have a family. By the time you get up to something that'll take on 4 people - even kit planes have to be assembled "on site" if you don't know what you are doing... and I don't know what I am doing!
Better to just buy a used plane really!
This is an idea of what I was thinking of.

Wullie,
those old ghost towns, any of them have one or two residents left? Do you know what killed these towns off? Looks like there could be some interesting gear left about. in the old sheds etc.
Cheers
Heelerau
Like where ya heads at there Gordon, but I reckon if I were superstitious, and I'm superstitious, I'd be careful about taking stuff from Ghost towns. I've heard stories of one place (the name of which eludes me now, but it's up the Central Northern area of the US) where people who take anyhthing that's laying around (and there seems that there is a fair bit) that nothing but bad things happen until they return the stuff back to it's rightful place.
It could also nust be a great way of ensuring no silly buggers come in with the idea that that bit 'o' crap o'er there would just be the ducks guts fer fixin' that ol' thingumy-bob hangin' in the back 'o' th' shed back 'ome too!
