Some of us have been here for a little while. I believe that gentlemanly conduct is at least required of us all.

Your actions prove one of the problems with forums. Whether your posts are merely rhetorical or serious, how can we be sure? There is no body language to observe. No facial expression. IMO, you are perturbed because no one is reaching out to join you and your opinion. As I mentioned in an earlier post, you are certainly welcome to start your own forum where no rules exist, no censorship is allowed. You can be responsible for footing the bill and anything else that comes along. Then you can report back to us and let us know how things are going.

I think that it is a good idea to air what happened and Stigmata did start the thread. Josh referred to this as an extended family and even in a family discussion somebody may get a little ruffled. However, in a family, everybody generally cools down the next day. Somebody mentioned respecting an opinion. You may not agree with that opinion but you should respect it; just as that person should respect your right to disagree with his opinion.
I sincerely hope that all involved will return to this forum.

Social norms and rules aren't always "published." Observation of others' actions, and interpreting reactions can idetnify what is allowed and what isn't.
People remain on the outside of a community when they are incapable or unwilling to comply with the community's norms/rules.

People tend to feel strongly about politics and religion, and often will take disagreement personally.
That is also why I usually refrain from participating in political or religious threads.
Even though these topics get discussed only in the off-topic section, they influence the other forums because people might hold grudges or form opinions of each other, based on 'lively' discussions in the OT section.

while we are kind of on the topic of the 2nd amendment thread, I would like to apoligize for any post I made on such a heated topic. I made a couple of post when it started and never got back to reading it, and didnt realize until today how heated of a topic it became. So in that, I would like to do the gentlemen thing to do, and aplogize for anything that I might have said.

I like to live by the following rules when using Internet forums:
1. There is no promise of, nor right to, free speech in an online forum. Anyone who is not the owner of the site, whether a registered member or moderator, is a guest and is subject to the rules set up by the site's owner. Those who are looking for a venue for free speech should start a forum of their own.
2. If you aren't sure whether what you're about to post will be regarded as offensive, inappropriate, mean-spirited, racist, sexist, or whatever, then assume it will be. Don't post it.
3. If you want to fool around, that's fine. But balance it by contributing something useful.
4. Don't log on just to pick a fight. Spend some time in the real world. Cool off. Similarly, don't waste anyone's time by trolling. :hmmm:
5. Deal with any issues you may have with a fellow member privately, one-on-one. Work toward resolution.

This community actually reminds me more of a barbershop like the movie "Barbershop." My opinion on the actual topic is that that they are moderators, not referees. This isn't debate class, it's a place for adults to come and talk about a hobby / art / religion (depending on how you look at it, I guess): straight razor shaving. Noone here is getting paid a wage, so they have the same rights as anyone else when it comes to using the forums. They should be able to do whatever a normal person does, and if they exhibit favoritism or abuse their powers, they should be reprimanded or returned to the plebes.

His (leftover) arguments were logical and, from what I saw (keeping in mind that what's left of that thread seems to be a watered-down version of what it was, seeing as how two members high-tailed it out of here and I think the current thread is too tame to warrant such a reaction), didn't cross the line. I also read that urleebird flew the coop, and yet he doesn't have a post in that thread. I also heard that he had been editing his posts, so...
Anyway, I clearly I got here too late. I wish I could have been here to watch it all unfold, but even though I wasn't, I'm going to conclude that everyone is overreacting.
Urleebird had probably the most posts in that thread. But he's edited out almost everything he posted on the forum.
Both sides (all sides?) in that argument made a lot of sense. The thing is though that they were not trying to make their point understood. They were trying to make the other party believe what they themselves believed.
As far as I see it does no harm to put the things you believe out there and clarify them when someone else asks questions about them. Just as long as you're not trying to convince them of your opinion.
I would have liked to have read urleebird's posts in that thread. I've seen many of his contributions in the past, and when a topic gets heated, his replies tend to become more and more offensive, what with the underlined and BOLDED type he often employs. Seeing as how he edited out all of his posts and judging by the whispers of indecency, I'll assume he played a pivotal role in that thread's deterioration. The leftovers were pretty tame, after all.
Like I said earlier, I see no point in taking part in a discussions like that. Firmly-held beliefs about politics and religion are not influenced by a few paragraphs from another person; they're simply inflamed.
Too bad that you didn,t Mr Lechs`s last post that caused Bill`s out burst,as a moderator of this great site it certainly was in my opinion very unprofessional .As far as I know Bill asked that his threads to be pulled because someone was going in and editing them on his behalf without his knowledge.Quote:

Actually, no; I'd rather Bill had stuck around. He was opinionated at times, but so what? Plus, he makes cool razors.
Like I said, I'm sure urleebird stoked the fire a bit himself, but if he was having his posts edited without his consent, I can totally understand his anger. If there's one thing I hate, it's being censored.
I've debated with Joe Lerch in the past. He's opinionated too. I was just unaware that any of his posts had been edited out, though. I thought urleebird's were the only ones to go. Sounds like Joe really acted up!
Oh, and I see nothing wrong with a moderator expressing his opinions on a forum. It's when he starts abusing his moderating powers that things get bad.
