Try Libre Office. While I haven't tried their latest version yet, I have been using it off and on since it was known as Open Office. It's 100% free, and works well.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Ditto, worked up powerpoint presentations for my pastor to use on Sunday services. Transitioned the data to his Windows system with no problem. Try it, from what I hear Bill Gates doesn't need the money.

I used Open Office until about 2 years ago ( Guess they changed their name again ) and would recommend it for anyone who does not specifically need MS Office. Unfortunately for my school I need MS Office as the Instructors can tell if it was produced in a different program and will mark me down or even fail an assignment if I process it any other way. Luckily I got a free copy for being in school at the time so I didn't feel the pain of having to purchase it.

That is ridiculous. Students' work should be judged according to its merit, not according to the tools used in its creation. Standardized file formats for submitted work make perfectly good sense as the person doing the grading has to be able to open it, but really who cares whether it was created by Word, Writer, or something else entirely?

Open office always met my needs. I use OS X now so I just use the stuff that Apple peddles-for better or worst.

Can I throw in another option.... Google docs through google drive. They can be downloaded as a microsoft format or pdf formatted if needed for transfer. Provides spredsheet, word processing and presentation software. Couple drawbacks as far as I'm concerned is that you need to be online to edit. But for me thats not a big issue and also means i can work on spreadsheets and documents on my phone on the move. Amd the other is that there is no editing via mobile phones for presentations. But you can view them on phone.
