I did nothing more with the steel than rub it well with Mother's. There are still fine pits and scratches but so much of the original finish is there I saw little reason to mess with it. Unfortunately there are two substantial cracks which I filled with CA after running it in the sonic washer for over an hour. The cracks seem to be from shrinkage. The one on the tang is very wide and neither of them would close up with pressure. I think the in the tang turned out as well as could be expected because of its width but I hoped the one in the wedge end would have lightened up more and seemed to darken a little with the glue. I even soaked it overnight in acetone to remove the CA one and reapplied it with no improvement.
