maybe this is the same thing? Ive had quite a few like this with the dark coated outer layer and light colored inside. this was extremely brittle compared to horn i usually work with. I had assumed all the ones I've had were dyed horn but I'm second guessing after your post pups. more pondering before i blanket label "dyed horn" again haha :hmmm:
Those bugs take the easiest route in. I have had some with perfect outsides and gouged-out good on the insides! A lot of this stuff is natural inclusions as well as delamination.
If a buffalo got a damaged horn in his lifetime, back in the day, it may well show up in some old scales.
