Thread: Wm. Jackson & Co.

Wm. Jackson & Co. began as Ashton, Jackson & Co. in 1841 on South St., Sheffield as an American merchant, cutlery and file manufacturer. They had an office in New York. His partner Richard Aston died in 1846 at the age of 36. William continued as Ashton, Jackson & Co. until 1850 when he began trading under his own name. By 1853 he was based at Sheaf Island Works, Pond Hill. Between 1861 and 1866 he was partnered with Edward Newton with the firm styled Jackson, Newton & Co. That would date this razor 1853 – 1861. As a side note Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth and a co-conspirator, were reputed to have brandished Wm. Jackson bowie knives.
A 6/8 near wedge blade with significant uneven hone wear prior to restoration. The scales found with the razor were plastic and a period correct set in honey horn with a traditional lead wedge and brass pins and collars were added. The in process pictures are at 400 grit off the grinder to check for an even bevel.
