Hot Off The Workbench - Hand Forged Straight in Ebony Scales

Here is a piece that I'm really proud of, in how it turned out fitting the clients every desire.

The request was for a simple, traditional straight razor. Something with a postmodern feel, but also invoking a nostalgic sense.

With that in mind, I crafted this 100% original design. Pulling artistic composition from late 1800’s razors, and blending in a little 1950’s futuristic feel, along with keeping the piece simple, yet complex enough to stand alone in its own right. As a postmodern razor, I created this piece to fit all of that together in beauty and functionality.

The piece is 1095, hand forged, then ground to profile and belt sanded to final grind and profile. He scales are ebony, with a brass wedge, to add a little contrast and polished to a mirror finish fro some extra shiny! The blade too has been polished to a mirror finish.

This was a great build and I have ended up loving the lines of the blade and scales together. I find it beautiful, and wanted to show off a little bit here, with the folks that I know would appreciate it!

What's the spine thickness ? No offence meant but the spine looks too skinny for the width of the blade.

This is why I love this place! You, are spot on! Note the razor - it's missing any kind of a bevel. I ground the blade to final size and honed the bevel after pics. The blade size for the pictures was just shy of a 7/8. For final grind, I took the blade to a 9/16, and the spine is a 3/16 - giving me a 3 to 1 ratio between the two, or a bevel angle of 18.92% - I know that's a little bit thick, however the edge shaved wonderfully, and the client is very happy, so I'm good with it.

Unfortunately, no. Once the final grind/bevel/hone was completed, I boxed and shipped. No other pics were taken.

Beautiful razor! I really like it. Too bad you don't have any final photos of completed razor. We can imagine based on your description though. Really nice artistic interpretation based on clients desires. Admirable job! You are a fine craftsman and artist.
