Just got this one off the workbench and across the hones. I came by it in rough shape as someone went at it sideways with some kind of power tool. It had sideways grind marks on both sides and some pitting near the spine as well. The scales had lots of deep bug bites.


I'm still doing my restorations mostly by hand with simple tools. I cut scales out of a horn blank with a coping saw and shaped, sanded and polished to match the originals. I got lucky with a little nice coloration on the end.

I hand sanded the blade until all the grind marks and pits were out being careful to remove steel evenly. Even steel removal is important to avoid waviness in the blade face and an uneven bevel. Here I have it sanded to 800 grit, later I continued on by hand to 3000 grit then spent a couple minutes polishing the haze out with 1 and then .25 micron diamond lapping paste on a wool wheel with a dremel.
