No it isn´t a sanmai it´s a direkt lamination. So the edge part is not forgewelded between outer layers, it´s forged as one piece on the bottom of the blade. This method is necessary for very thin ground full hollows because the middle layer of a sanmai would come out in the thinnest part of the hollow ground and would interrupt the damascus pattern.

Yes it is Steller Sea Cow ( I didn´t know the translation) and it has it´s natural colour, it´s not stained.

I am not sure what a striker is, but I think you mean a blade that had to be discarded? That happens not very frequently and in this case all went well.
But the damascus blank was made for me by the Balbach forge in Germany. I don´t know if they had some issues ;-)

Ulric is correct. the first two razors on my site are done with sanmai construction, and you can see how far up the blade the pattern is removed because of the hollow grind

Here in the U.S. a striker is a smith's helper with a sledge hammer doing most of the actual physical work.

I thought that you were saying that the explosion damascus was hand forged without power hammers

Now I understand! The Balbach forge definitely uses a power hammer, but nonetheless the damascus is cut and stacked by hand and the final shape is forged by hand.
