Sum Herders...
A long-running project which changed directions a few times.
Over the years, a pair of F&B Sterling scales, identical with exception of different monograms on opposite sides.
From what I can tell, one has 'RFD' which I have determined will be called 'Really Fine Day'!
The other has a fancy capital 'L' which has led me to refer to it as simply 'Laverne'!
The blades were acquired many years apart. Both are F Herder 7/8 #25's.
One of the most attractive blades ever made, IMO.
They are literally NOS from leftover Herder stock, bought-out and sold-off back in the day after the company's demise.
As-new without ever being scaled.
The box is of quarter-sawn oak which originally housed a pair of Mappin and Webb razors.
The missing cartouche on top was replaced with mother of pearl from a broken scale and the inner top padded-up with new red fabric to hold these thin razors snugly. Minwax dark poly stain was applied twice. Nice, sturdy box.
Both were finished a while ago, but with the holidays and other goings-on, I decided to save them for New Years.
A bit over the top, I reckon. I suppose that is what I dig about them.
Thanks for looking!
Happy New Year!
