Here it is. My very first self made straight razor. 8/8, near wedge with a big smile.
The handle wood is oiled and the wedge is from blonde horn an brass. I think, it isnt still perfect, but for the first try o.k. The shave with it was very close but not very smooth. Perhabs I have to change some things in the hardening process.

What steel did you use? Did you forge or grind? I love the scales with the cut-out - what material is that?

The steel is 1.2842 or 90MnCrV8 --> Metallography and material testing at steel - for metallographer and material tester
The wood of the handle is bubinga.
For the filework i used files :rofl2: ....sorry ;)

Not the steel was not forged, only grinded with a belt grinder. With my week english is the full process hard to explain. I will try it:
First I bought the steel with 50 cm * 3 cm * 0,8 cm. Then I cutted with a angle grinder peaces in the right lenght. Now I went on the belt grinder for the shape and hollow grind and drilled the pivot hole. After that I hammerd in my sign (not perfect, because I dont have a anvil). After the razor was grinded up to grit 600 I gave them to harden. From here it came back with 63 HRC. Now I made the edge and polished it again up to 2500 grit, then buffing and honing.
There are a lots more details in every workstep, but I´m only a beginner. I think here in the forum are more experts (english speaking), who are can explain this more accurate and better.

that's beautiful, and I particularly like the smile. I have an Engstrom with a smile like that (it's 5/8 full hollow, so it's a very different animal, but it has the same constantly arcing smile), and it's really fun to hone and really fun to shave with. So that puppy will be really cool when you get the steel right.

Too hard definitely not. But perhaps I have some other Problems with the type of steel or the hardening process. I got in the last days some very good imput in a german knifemaker forum. But it is not possible for me to translate this in english. It is difficult enought to understand this in my native language.
On Monday I will send the razor to a german knifemaking guru and I hope he can give me some helpfull feedbacks about the making, material and hardening process for further projects.

Very creative work, reminds me of what a Klingon would use.:rock:, With an HRC of 63, the steel you mentioned (don't recognize it) must be 1.2 carbon content-like the denomination of the name ;1.2842 -90MnCrV8 , is that a chrome/vanadium type steel crucible?

I wonder about your makers mark, the stamp. How did you make that? Did you make your own stamp?

Thank you. The stamp was made for me. I sended them the design in .pdf and a week later, I had it. Not cheap, but I think its much more better than an etching. Most of the vintage razors, even if they had more than 150 years have not lose there stamp. I dont think a etching is so resistant.
The problem is, it is not so easy to beat the mark in the steel. Its need a littel training and confidence, when you beat with a 1,5 kg hammer with full force on a little stamp in your hand ;) I hope the next time it will come out better.
