The J.R. Torrey Co. - US - Worcester. Mass ~ Torrey 922
The owner of this razor had bought this Torrey 922 model but the original tang covers were replaced with some metal ones.
The person he bought it from must have replaced the original ones which were mother of pearl and imo probably damaged, hence the metal replacements.
Anyway, the metal ones did not fit that razor at all so I was asked to replace them with faux tortoise ones and also rescale in the same material. I was also requested to use the T.I. style scale design, a third pin and black acrylic wedge.
It was a challenge replacing those tang covers since I had to sand them down to be very thin. I snapped one tang cover while peening so I had to redo that one. I was trying to not use a spacer but with the material being so thin and brittle I has no choice but to use a spacer. Second time around it all peened nicely and secure.
Basically I rough cut them, drilled the holes and used adjustable screws to hold it together. I then used my dremel with a drum sander, carefully removed and contoured them nicely as close as possible to the tang's frame. Finished with 220 dry, 400 and 600 wet sand paper.
Removed the tang covers.
Used the bench sander and sanding paper to thin out and flatten the covers. Brought the covers to a high shine on my buffer.
Peened everything together and finalized under my buffer to a beautiful shine.
I used a tapered wedge as this would also help in widening the scales for placement of the third pin.
