Here's a new design that's really easy to use and handles like a sports car. It's got a 2" blade and counterweighted handle to balance on your index finger.

I love the idea of the Purist. Can hardly wait to try one :beer2:
Robert, that's a beautiful razor. I really like your (redesigned?) maker's mark, too.
With all the weird angles on my face, that short blade would really be an advantage...
Josh
Great concept & very useful stand. Bare blades need a safe rest :tu
That is amazing! Was this commissioned, or your own creative plaything? I really like it... :beer2:
I really like this design. You most definitely have my attention!
This was an idea I've been rattling around my brain for about six months. The idea was for simple elegance, easy handling and something of a "pure" shaving tool with form following function throughout. I'm glad you guys like it. The fellow that has the first prototype said it's a fantastic shaver and "handles like a sports car".
Wow doesn't cut it! I want one doesn't doesn't even begin to say! Be proud Robert, what a beautiful piece of work you are sharing with us and I thank you!
Hmmmm.....little poetic there :rolleyes:.
Smart !!!!
I mean of course it's good looking, and all the rest, and I am sure it shaves great, but the whole concept is just plain SMART !!!!!
I really like this one Robert ...
That is beautiful.
Very imaginative and excellent lines. Love the razor holder!:)
Great idea !!!!!
very cool i'd definitely give it a try :)

Just letting you know every time there is a new post on this thread, I view it from page one just so I can see that razor. Really, really cool. Even if it was made out of recycled Russian tank steel a la Islamabad I would want one just for the aesthetics- which are, in my opinion, out-of-this-world.
Hmm.. I think that is the first razor to make my gotta have list. Time to start saving for a nice piece of jewelry for SWMBO if those do become available. ;)
Fantastic design! Totally awesome.
Lu
Very nice razor! I have no doubt that it shaves very well, just like the rest of yours do!
Richard
Robert, hopefully immitation is the sincerest form of flattery... You inspired me to make something like this for my own use. (Don't worry, I wouldn't dream of ripping off your design for items that I will make for sale...) I'm happy with how it came out, but it's not as refined as your design. It's in the tempering oven now. :)
Thanks for sharing.
Josh
Robert are you able to make this in any of the grinds you offer? Looks fantastic.
Wow! Nice! :bow
Its a great mix of Japanese and Western styling, and very simple and elegant. Great job!
Very Interesting, like it :)
Yes, it can be in any grind. The standard grind is between 1/2 to 1/4 hollow. That makes them quite tough and with good weight. But I could accommodate any grind requested. I'd have to adjust the counterweight for different grinds, but that just means a slightly thinner handle for more hollow grinds.
Oh, and for any of you into Wiseguy style cooking, Paul Cicero would have really appreciated this :)
That is a beautiful razor. (and what great movie)
"wow" seems kinda inadequate for this one, Robert.
Curious about the stand, though...how is the blade held (I imainge the edge is not touching wood?) Does it taper in faster than the grind, in order to hold the blade?
Simply amazing. I hope to get the chance to check one out.
I think it's a great design. Is it easy to strop using a good back and forth rhythm?
Chris L
The edge doesn't touch wood at all. The slot is deeper than the blade and you're right, the design is to hold it by the shoulder and then cradle the tang. It sits nicely in the stand. You can push the stand around by pushing the razor with a finger in the gatorgrip finger notch and it won't dislodge.
I thought it was extremely easy to strop and hone. That was one of the things I felt were a "must" for this.
Here were the things I had in mind for the design engineering:
* easy to hone
* easy to strop
* easy to maintain and keep clean and polished (no scales to collect gunk)
* solid no-slip grip
* flared tang so it can't slip "through" your hand
* blade large enough to make full face shaving a snap
* blade small enough to easily maneuver it
* stout 1/4 to 1/2 hollow grind for good weight and sturdy blade
* thinned out razor edge for easy touchups when/if necessary
(my daily shaver got intial honing and still shaves great a year later)
* Tang counterbalanced to the blade
* good hand feel
* index-finger groove over spine shoulder
* slightly extended tip for tight places and precise trimming
And, of course, doing it with a bit of flair and elegance. I'm glad you guys like it. It took a long time to get it all together in my mind and I'm glad I finally get to make it available.
I love it!
But, I would be afraid of it getting knocked over and the blade coming out and hitting the floor or my foot. Or someone picking it up and the samething happening.
Does it have a blade retension device?
Silver2
LOL, yep that would work.
I was thinking more on the lines of a magnetic retension.
Silver2
Damn!
... ... ...
I bet you could sell a thousand of those, Robert. Such an excellent design. I'd want one. I just have to sell off some of my razors first to free up some fun money.
Chris L
Robert,
I've looked at this thread a few (dozen) times now. Besides my amazement at the razor, the stand has me thinking. One could make a top piece that would have cut-out over the razor, it could slip on, and then clip on, making a firm, ENCLOSED case for storage and even travel!
Now, I am not that person, as my woodworking skills are horrible (one bad adventure in 1982 still has me banned from making birdhouses within 30 miles of a wetland in the state of New Jersey), but if anyone was up to it, that would be fantastic!!
This is an awesome looking razor I need it!
That is a beautiful design,so much i sent my order in via email. Please check your email Papa Bull.
um.. I love the pics of that razor, but it looks even better sitting on my counter :rock:
I can hardly wait to give it a whirl!
I couldn't wait either....I ordered one as soon as I heard they'd be available (by which I mean as soon as Robert responded to my "I WANT ONE!" e-mail that I sent as soon as I saw this thread!)
Hi Guys...I just received my "Purist". Prototype #2 from a great member here and I must say it is so simple, yet I cant stop looking at it and thinking how cool it is. I wont shave with it for a while since its a gift I am giving myself later this year but i wont stop staring at it for quite some time.
Congrats!
I was fortunate enough to be able to check this out while shopping at Gentlemen's Best recently. It's honestly a little smaller and heavier than I thought it be, and that's not in a bad way either. The balance was nice and the tang was very easy to grip. There was nothing especially awkward about it that I could find. The matching hardwood stand was a nice touch in keeping with the simplicity theme.
