    Default Reworked GD by Seraphim

I haven't seen Seraphim post here in a quite a while, but I've only been around a few months. I just got this one from him and absolutely LOVE IT. I got it for the looks. I know it's not some exotic hand made blade, but I think the way he reworked it is art. It has a thumb notch, worked spine and reshaped toe and heel.

On top of the good looks, BOY HOWDY, this is a shaver. It felt smooth as silk, no pulling at all, but left my face amazingly smooth after the first pass. Second pass finished it BBS. I understand he uses lapping film, not hones. I could not be happier with this razor.

    Cool razor.

I really like the look of a worked spine and I hear Seraphim's edges are wicked sharp.

    Nice razor.
You are correct about the lapping film. He likes to finish on 1 micron diamond lapping film (wet) on a granite reference plate. He also likes to use a thin sheet of paper as a cushion between the film and the plate. I tried this cushion idea myself and I think it's a good idea for several reasons. The paper soaks up the water and displaces bubbles from under the film. It also helps hold the film in place.

He may have upped the ante. He told me he finishes on .5 um. I ordered some lapping film to give this a try. I don't expect it to make me a honemeister overnight, but it's worth trying out to see what results I can get.

I really like the film. I've never gone below 1 micron. The diamond film cuts very clean. The edge through a 10X loup always looks perfect with no halos along the edge that might reflect off burrs or rounded places. I have used other film besides diamond and it seemed to work also. I use the film on small tempered glass plates ~ 3"x6" and also on aluminum strips that are 1"x6". I usually hone on water stones, but if I can't get the edge I want I switch to film. It has never failed me.

When honing using film, do you use a honing stroke or a stropping stroke? Seems like if doing a regular stroke it would cut into it. I have never seen the stuff in person before so I don't know what exactly it is like.

I just got some to try out. It is plastic film and will not tear any more than sandpaper would. I'm using a standard honing stroke. I'm not finding it any easier than using stones, but I see a much finer edge under the scope, compared to my Norton stones. Very straight and uniform. Maybe this thread is ready to move to the honing forum....
