Ying and Yang, Matching Japanise ground Solgen in ebony and bone
These are a matched pair of Solgen razors ground in Japan. They are short blades but feel good in the hand. It was a straight rescale, no buffing. The blades are engraved Solgen Real Japaniese Hollow Ground.
The original scales had cracks in the pivot pin. The owner wanted ying yang effect in the scales. One set to be ebony and the other to be bone. I gave the scales a heavy bow so when the blade is closed, the word Solgen is visible above the scales. The bows also mimic the curved symmetrical shape of the Ying Yang symbol. The end of the blade has an unusual angle cut then they square off so I cut the end of the scales to match the angle of the blade cut that protrudes above the scale. That allows the eye to flow along the lines evenly.
The bone started out as a cow femur that got resawn to slabs and the scales cut from it. They are raw unfinished white bone. The Ebony got a high gloss epoxy resin finish to contrast the flat white of the bone. The owner wanted a simple ebony and bone wedge in the corresponding scale. I think they came out quite nice and wish they were my matched set.
