First full restoration - Rodgers 5/8" hollow in blond horn
Hey folks,
So I've been getting more into restorations recently and have hand sanded up a few blades now, and made some scales. I finally got some time to assemble this one this weekend and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out..! :)
The blade was rusted and pitted to anything when I got it (no before pics stupidly.. I'll remember next time) so I hand sanded it from 120 grit sandpaper through 240, 400, 600 and 1200 then onto 1800, 3600, 6000 and 12000 grit micromesh and then polished with MAAS. I didnt get all the pitting out completely but its come out looking really great I think.
The scales are blond horn, which I cut out with a Dremel and cutting disk, then rough shaped with the 80 grit sanding drum. Then I used the same paper/micromesh progression as I used on the blade. The wedge was made from black horn.
The pins are triple stacked (Thanks Glen! :bow) brass and nickel with brass rod and I'm really happy with the peening as well.
This one is going to my dad as fathers day present, hopefully he'll like it! :)
Anyways, here are some pics. You'll have to excuse the rubbishy quality, I am far from a decent photographer and my camera is about 15 years old...!
