First full restoration - Rodgers 5/8" hollow in blond horn
Hey folks,
So I've been getting more into restorations recently and have hand sanded up a few blades now, and made some scales. I finally got some time to assemble this one this weekend and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out..!
The blade was rusted and pitted to anything when I got it (no before pics stupidly.. I'll remember next time) so I hand sanded it from 120 grit sandpaper through 240, 400, 600 and 1200 then onto 1800, 3600, 6000 and 12000 grit micromesh and then polished with MAAS. I didnt get all the pitting out completely but its come out looking really great I think.
The scales are blond horn, which I cut out with a Dremel and cutting disk, then rough shaped with the 80 grit sanding drum. Then I used the same paper/micromesh progression as I used on the blade. The wedge was made from black horn.
The pins are triple stacked (Thanks Glen! ) brass and nickel with brass rod and I'm really happy with the peening as well.
This one is going to my dad as fathers day present, hopefully he'll like it!
Anyways, here are some pics. You'll have to excuse the rubbishy quality, I am far from a decent photographer and my camera is about 15 years old...!

Beautiful! Seriously! I mean, I may be weird but I'm a fan of some pitting. I actually can't wait 'till I get to restore my first blade and oddly enough I hope it has some pitting hahaha.
The scales, beautiful. Did I use that word already? Anywho, I love blonde horn scales. You practically have the finished product I dream to have on my first restore.
I'll put my envious part aside to say CONGRATULATIONS! :P

Beautiful job Stu. You did a great job with the horn and the blade looks great too. Your pins are well done also, I like the stacked washers.
Your Dad will love it, I'm sure.

Well done Stu !
Sometimes we have to accept a little pitting espesh with hollows. No point in turning em into tin foil
Love the scales too.The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

The horn is beautifully done and the wedge perfect. Very nice work.. and for a first? You will be frontrunner when folks look for a restorer of old razors.
Very Respectfully
