Steampunk shaving set

Hi there ! I really like your website. I apologize for my bad english, not my first language.

About a year ago, I was ordered a special shaving set. A friend from the french shaving forum wanted a steampunk-inspired straight razor, with the assorted badger brush and holder.

He helped me with drawings, but let me total freedom in the creation process.

I started to gather various junk pieces and the idea slowly came to life.

Some of the manual watches gears I used.

First off, the badger brush. I put some random gears in order and poured inclusion resin over it. 24 hours later, tadaa...

I then sanded it and placed it in a tube. Unfortunatly, it was aluminium :( Didn't manage to get a brass or copper tube.

Next step, with the help of a brass light bulb holder. The whole piece is then soaked in boiling bleach to give it an ancient look.

The badger brush is finished.

Next step was the razor itself. My customer provided me with the blade, I only had to craft the handle.

I used a computer motherboard as a base, added gears and stuff and poured resin.

I then cut the resin, sand a lot (manually), and voilà !

A handful of month later I finally managed to craft the holder. I used a piece of wood, two copper tubes, a brass tube, some gears and a brass plaque.

That's really great, I love all the steam punk- inspired restores and customs. Do you think you would ever be able to put a working clock in the base of the brush? That would be really cool if you could get it to work

I love that brush... The scales and holder are nice too but that brush goes above and beyond. Way to go!

My friends already think, shaving with a straight razor, is like living inside a time warp; and then this feat of shear genius.

I never would have thought steampunk and circuit board. Seeing what you did, it just seams like a natural. Great way to blend the shaving tool that was popular yesterday, with today's times.

That could be all there is to it, but the finish looks great too. You could have used almost anything under the resin and your detail work would have made it look wonderful.

That is some sine workmanship!! Brings me back away's as I did work as a bench Horologist[Watchmaker] for a few years and have in the past done a lot of work with parts like those!!

No no, not everyone is a geek lol

You know Cyberpunk? Bladerunner, anime etc? well steampunk is another scifi subgenre, i think the steampunk equivalent of neuromancer is a book called "Difference engine" although it could be argued that the original steampunk was HG Wells "war of the worlds" and "The Time Machine" and Jules Vernes 20000 leagues under the sea.

The idea is this, Imagine the digital revolution never happened, or in extreme cases electronics full stop and that victorian style technology continued to evolve up until now. That's steam punk. Some types rule out transistors, silicon IC's etc, and therefore technology based on valves (or tubes as americans call them) continued on. Games like Fallout 3, could be classed as kind of steampunk, and films like mutant chronicles (based on a board game).

Chracteristics are steam power, tubes, big cogs, brass and iron, victorian styling etc etc.

In a very broad sense the awfull will smith film "wild wild west" is steampunk

Just a regular grinder with a sanding belt.

I could have used a rasp or file, and then sanding paper. The resin is pretty soft.
