Steampunk + Paduak scaled Joseph Rodgers straight razor

I've been toying with different steampunk themed scales and thought I'd try my hand at using the scroll saw to cut away the middle section of wood and insetting some gears with a resin window.
I used some thin copper as a liner and then glued each gear in place before pouring the resin.

The spacer is a green smokey acrylic.

I love Joseph Rodgers & Sons blades and I've been hungry to get scales on their "Master Razor no2" Now I've only to get it on the stones and test it out!

Excellent set of scales and a great job on the blade restore. Well done, looks very nice.

I really like those scales. The window idea is very creative. Overall it is a gorgeous razor.

I just have to ask, "Who's missing a watch?". Nice work!

do the scales match up on both sides? I see a cross 'beam' around the midpoint, is that on both sides... how thin are they, it looks like a tough build. nice work.

Tum, I just love that steam themed stuff you do. It is very cool that you hang on to that theme too, your razors are unique in that way, and I think it is great. Very attractive and a real eyecatching thing to do to a razor.

I put the "cross beam" on the left side only just to mix it up a bit. This was my first time using my scroll saw to do fine cutting. Usually I just rough out the scales and sand them on the belt sander. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I just traced out the shape with a pencil on the rough cut scales then cut them out followed by some filing to fix my unsteady areas.

Thanks Mike. I steampunked the razor I bought from you too! I sold it a couple weeks ago. That blade was perfect for the hammered copper scales!

Paco!! You were only about 40 min from my house when we met :) My "shop" is just a small corner in the garage that's so packed with woodworking stuff, reloading tools and scale stuff that I don't think we could both fit!! Yeah I still have the beard. I've made a deal with the wife that when I drop a few more pounds I will shave it off. I'm getting close!!

Beautiful job on the XLNT!! I really didn't care for how I shaved with it, which is why I sold it, but now I see it was meant to happen.! Great job man!! I love it. I should have bought it back, LOL!

I created became a member just so I could tell you how much I appreciate your work. The steampunk straight razor idea just popped in my head and I wanted to see if someone had done it already. Just finished honing this blade that rests in a different version of the same idea:

Here are a few progress Pics:
I cut the blank from the same piece of Paduak hardwood as the first set then hollowed them out with a scroll saw. I evened out the cuts using some files

I then attached a copper spacer to the back of the scales and glued the gears in place

Clear resin provided the "glass." I gave over poured the mixture on this set then sanded it back in an attempt to make the "glass" look more aged (kind of like hand blown glass).

What did you use to cut the brass? How thick is the brass? I have a Carbo-Magnetic I want to attempt this for. A gift for my brother as he loves this type of stuff. I'd appreciate the help. :)

I used tin snips like these

I used to use a thicker copper sheet which needed heavier-duty snips.

However lately I've been using a thin sheet (.16") that you could probably cut with stout scissors. This stuff is much more inexpensive and keeps the scales light!

Very beautiful work. It reminds me of the work of a potter who lives here in upstate NY. Some of his steampunk pieces have been featured at the smithsonian. Hey you never know -maybe they'd be interested in a straight razor exhibit!!
