Another Visit to Robert Williams
I went to visit with Robert Williams again today. We had several cups home roasted and ground coffee along with some fresh bread which was imported from Northern NJ. In between several cups of coffee, pastries and fresh bread, Robert showed me a few things about using buffers, polishing compounds and grease less compounds. After, Robert once again began to make a razor for one of his customers. The razor is going to be 10/8 in size which is quite large.
Robert took a piece of flat stock and in a few hours created the razor blank, ground the tang and added the notches on the tang. I cannot tell you how much work is takes to make a custom razor. It took him several hours of hard work during which he must have walked several miles just around his shop. I took a bunch of photographs but will only post the ones I think show the progression of the razor.
Someday I'll get up the nerve to make my own razor or knife with his help. He was kind enough to offer again today but I am more fascinated with what he does. I cannot tell you the skill and artistic ability that one needs to make a custom razor. My hat is off to all those who have the ability to make a custom razor.
I also fully understand why the waiting lists for these custom razors are so long. It takes many, many hours of hard work to create just one.
