Spike restore

After reading about these well-regarded Union Cutlery Spike razors, I'd been on the lookout for one of my own. Finally found it in an antique store last summer, and it has now emerged from my dining table... um... workshop.

The old scales were toast. Beat up, stained, and bearing strange inscriptions, as shown in the picture. That carving is deep. The new ones are acrylic, with stacked stainless washers. The reason for the extra-thick spacer is that when I was taking apart the old razor, I found that someone had unpinned it and added a second spacer to the original. For good measure, they'd repinned it with a galvanized nail, which did my flush cutters no good. I decided to keep the wide spacing but go with conventional nickel-silver pins.

Other than some buffing, the blade needed almost no work. There was some hone-wear but the geometry was otherwise excellent. I'm looking forward to having this one in the rotation.
