Thread: Sheffield Scissor & Razor Co. (My quickest restore ever)

I was digging around in an Antique Store this week and came up with this 6/8 Sheffield wedge.
Most of my before and after photos usually show some pretty major changes, but not with this one.
I decided that this one was pretty old and rough and scared and I kinda like it that way.
I stripped it down hand sanded with 320 then 400 grit to get rid of all active rust, and that was pretty much it for the sanding.
I did feel like it needed some patina back to match the look of the blade, and darkened it up with vinegar.
I dont know what the scales are made of. They are not horn or celluloid and I dont think Bakelite, any input on that is welcome. They just got a light sand and the original lead wedge went back in. Didnt sand them a whole lot as I thought they might look out of place if they were too nice.
Right now I'm calling this one an 1892 model. The info in the Razor forum sticky says The Sheffield Scissor & Razor Co. operated from 1892, and as Sheffield razors were stamped with England (which this is not) after the early 1890's i'm guessing it might be around there somewhere.

I like this a lot! I've done a few blades where I left some of pitting and patina on it. Gives it some character and show's its battle scars. The final product here looks awesome!!! More razors should be done this way IMO!!

That's a beast, Grant! I think gutta percha or pressed leather on the scales. Wotta spine! You might give it an old time knife-hone! Good luck! Good to save it!

What a great find! You should be proud of your "quickest restore ever", I certainly would.
I look forward to hearing how the honing goes and especially how she shaves...
Maybe with that warp it will follow the curvature of your face better!
