Thread: Straight Razor Custom MOP Mosaic 9/8+

Good Evening,

Here is a razor that I have been working on and just finished up last evening. The design is one that has been a mental work in progress for some time. The scales are individual fitted diamond MOP sections with Pre ban elephant ivory liners. I was not sure how it would all turn out. However, despite some of the difficulties of this material, it is well worth the effort in my opinion. I chose not to overlay the MOP with any epoxy so as to preserve the natural look and feel. Of course I did sand and polish to a high sheen. The blade is o1 with a worked spine and lower jimps
The asymmetrical blade shape was in part inspired by some of the very old straights. I was shooting for "elegant" on this one, lol. Shaved with it last night and it was wonderful.

Mostly I find the look of MoP to be cheap, almost plasticy, which of course is from the overuse of pearloid in our world, but it Is a bias I can't seem to shake. That being said, this piece is elegant. I was told when first getting into music That there's three types of music you can play. Music that's sounds harder than it is, to please the masses, music that is as hard as it sounds, to please intellectuals, and music That is significantly harder than it sounds, to please other musicians. I get the feeling that even with my respect for the craftsmanship of this piece, that I can't even fathom the work that went into it. A piece to be adored by fellow craftsmen.

I do appreciate the kind words on my work. I pinned this one with hex head screws. The front screw tapered and counter sunk flush with a MOP cap. The rear was done similar except I slightly recessed the mop cap and added a washer to provide support at the pivot. The caps were adhered with two part epoxy on the front (permanent). The pivot screw caps were done the same but float on the washer. My thought was if necessary one could rather easily remove/re-adhere the caps if tension adjustment and or cleaning were absolutely necessary. Although, I do not see this to be the case for a long time. The MOP caps that I used in this case were taken from some old vintage mixed matched cuff links that I had in my (go-to looking for stuff box). hehehe Anyway, just thought they were different and might be cool on this one.
