The first thing I did after seeing how this turned out was to price laser etching machines! Too rich for my blood right now but maybe photoshop to make designs to be contracted out.

If the surfaces mate well it should pin up just fine.
A tapered wedge is functional in that it allows the scales to flex thru the rotation of the blade preventing loosening & wear at the pivot. If the scales are too stiff you could maybe thin them ? I don't know if the wood is too brittle to prevent that but that is a reason traditional scales were made with flexible materials.
