Shaving with a scuttle ?

I've gradually come round to the idea of a dedicated shaving scuttle and was checking out the Georgetown scuttles
and this Aussie-made offering:

Has anyone used these scuttles ?....

I'd like to support the Australian potter who makes these but the Georgetown ( U.S.) offerings look pretty damned good.
The price is similiar too.

My family gave me this Georgetown Pottery scuttle for this past Fathers' Day:

I love this thing! The bowl is just the right size for whipping up lather, it keeps the lather warm, and it's heavy enough (when filled with water) that I'm confident about using it one-handed with it sitting on the counter. Though not an issue for me, it might be too large for folks with smaller mitts, and it does have some heft to it...I think mine is the G8, middle sized model...I can't imagine how large the big version is!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I wouldn't want a scuttle without a stopper. Even if you hold it perfectly upright while making lather, you're going to slosh water around. I prefer to hold whatever I'm using to make lather at more of an angle (sometimes even on its side), so a stopper is indispensable for me!

no idea of the size of them but, only an idea by the pic with the Simpson Chubby 3 in it
now I gotta see how big a chubby is to scale it LOL


Edit: the chubby is about 4" tall so the bowl would be about Ø3.5 to 4" inside at the top
not a bad size on par with the imported GP G12 option

Do your self a favor and get the biggest one you can afford ...like ones that hold 6 cups of hot water...all the smaller ones are useless . Trust me.. A scuttle will only provide you will warm suds ...not hot Suds !! I use mine in the Wintah time..for a nice warm lather for the 1 st,2nd..and 3rd pass.

I helped Helena design the HG scuttles. She didn't incorporate all the feedback I gave her but she's done a pretty good job. I use a Georgetown one myself because I like the fact that it's got a stopper in it and when you're whipping up a batch of lather I think it's good to stop the water splasing around and out the spout.

I use an SWK scuttle Schwarzweisskeramik and love it, i was torn between the G20 and this one. What swayed me in the end was the size of the spout to fill it up and the material it was made from (earthenware) but it was a close call

There are also good reports about the Dirty Bird scuttles.

Hi Bongo,

I have a "Dead Mule Pottery" handmade shaving scuttle. I love it. It's big, and has a cork stopper. I think heritageshaving.com is the only place that sells them, so they're in the US only which is a common curse...

I tried to load a photo, but they're always rotated, and I've tried rotating the original before importing it, but that didn't work. So if you want to see what I'm talking about, you'll have to google it.

I started with an old school scuttle but I ended up sending it to a member in the US, happy young chap he was. I am face lathering now but the thought has crossed my mind to go back to a scuttle. The old school ones I think are designed for face lathering anyway right? I have seen videos of people building lather in the bowl of the old style ones but I just don't think that's how it was intended, at least not all of them.

Have I added to this forum? Not at all, but I will say I would personally prefer an Australian one.

Perhaps you could try an antique shop, I imagine it would be fairly hard to find, maybe even eBay? A cheap one to try in case you find that you don't like it?

Those German ones look awesome though, maybe I'd not prefer an Australian one?

I liked the Australian ones, plus the stack-able soap cups would be a plus in limited space. Add to that no shipping fees from US or Europe and you're keeping the Australian economy going. I stopped using a scuttle when I switched to cold water shaving but still get nostalgic when I think about the one I sold.
