Oh keep up Mick, Norton's are so last week. All the cool kids are sourcing 1000,000,000,000 grit hones made from frozen unicorn tears these days.

Oh I have one of those too, but I call it a C12k...And I don't own a single Norton. You're the bloke who's asking after them, Mister 'so last week'! :p
Mick
I didn't end up with a Norton in the end, I got a naniwa 10k, and an Atoma 400g lapping plate. But even that's probably old hat.
You got something in between as well?
Mick
Hi Ed,
I bit the bullet a few months ago and bought a set of Naniwas (1k,5k,8k,12k) from Maggard Razors.
Can't remember the exact cost but the shipping was aud$50.00. I've never regretted it.

I've thought about buying one of those Welsh stones (approx 15k) from ebay. That will set me
back about aud$45.00 + the same in shipping.
All the above are 3" wide x 8" long - convenient !
The Big Daddy strop from Star Shaving Supplies is a good buy too if you're interested.
It's 3" x 21" stropping area and once again, convenient size.

I'd really like a Suehiro 20k but it's out of my price range for the forseeable future.
The 4 Naniwas do a great job on new and old straights.
Hope this helps,
Bongo
I have the other two slates, you are more than welcome to try them.
I am looking forward to trying the nani out, jt I need my razor to go blunt first. Grrr.
I have a 3" wide by just over 2' roo strop that I made, which I rather like.
Are you gonna put your name down for the social?
I know you are freo ish, two of us are Midland ish, and lets see where else.
Not really Ed. It's easier to keep an edge sharp than to sharpen it when it's blunt.
Periodically doing 5 strokes on a 12 k could save you some postage :)
How often is the question I can't definitively answer. Some guys might do 1 x week while others might do 1 x month.
Experiment by starting at the long end of the frequency & see if that works.
The razors still have nice edges, so I don't want to jeopardise tbat, as I am rotating a loaner from Carl, and the bone one from you i should be right for a while. The plastic razor is my Perth one so it only gets used every third week, but every dayish on the week so it should need a touch up about the same time. I am back in Perth week after next so I might do them all then. Provided Carl is ok with it, I'll ask.
Sorry, I will try to use more precise language next time, I meant slightly dull or a bit off, rather than butterknife. Though you did nearly talk yourself out of some work. :)
Have to give a big +1 for the nanis. Have dmt325/d8c, Nani ss in 1, 5, 8 and 10 and finish on small Escher(celebrated water hone). But get a bit of extra leather and some paste/s and you wont need to look at a hone for much longer and you'll keep your edges popping all the time.
