Feats in Woodworking great and small

Hi y'all,

I love coming to the workshop and seeing the crazy stuff y'all come up with so much that I wanted to start a thread for woodworking so that we could all share some of the cool things we come up with.

Here's mine for this week. It's a magnetic knife board out of spalted tamarind:

Got the wood flat and smooth. Bored holes in the back with a forstner bit. Epoxied in some rare earth magnets and hammered some dowels in. Flush cut them, more sanding, tung oil, sanding, natural finish, a tad of buffing.

Here it is all glued up:

It still needs some flush mounting brackets installed on the back, but it's pretty much good to go. It's got just the right amount of magnetic pull too. It holds the knife firmly, but won't grab it out of your hand.

Good looking piece of wood, and very nice knife. Love that old carbon steel.

How thick is the wood between the face and the magnet? I have been thinking of a similar project for my carbon steel collection.

I'm mid-way through a project for a razor, brush and soap bowl stand.
It needs final assembly, sanding and finishing. That will take a bit of time before pics can be posted.

Here's a kitchen knife and block I made recently. Figured maple, cocobolo, white corian and 1095.

Turning down some squares to have a go at some brushes. Want to make one for my dad for Father's Day. This is tambootie wood. Maybe I'll try to couple with some ebony.

Funny you say that Bill. When the wife walked into the garage, she couldn't figure out where the nice smell was coming from!

The wood is a little less than a quarter inch. The magnets are 1 inch in diameter. The smaller the magnet, the closer it needs to be to the surface of the board.

It's a saya for the knives I make. I plan on sinking a magnet in the end of it so that it pulls the knife into it.

Yep,far better than turning Horn,bone or Ivory,my shop usually smells like the the inside of a cow:)

A different kind of woodworking. Pink ivory handle on a large petty knife. The blade is AEB-L stainless razor steel, mirror polished on the edge blended into the satin finish.

If you ever work with pink ivory, go slow. It burns easily. I had to crank the KMG all the way down.

Some African black wood. Not sure what I'm going to do with it but man this is fun. Turned down to a real nice finish.

Great stuff,is fun to make wood demensionally perfect using a screw cutting lathe,slow feed, sharp bit you get a near perfect finish.

Yeah you got it exactly right. Nice single point, slow feed and let it do its work.
Taking your advice and cleaning them up, let me sit and see if they are stable before I make something. Up next is a piece of ebony.

For me, are very few things in my life more satisfying than doing what you did above,just watching the process is very gratifying.

Yes a metal lathe. Not ideal for woodworking but does ok for me. And like Pixel said you get the advantage of the lead screw drive and tool set up.
Bill also uses a traditional wood lathe.

As Above I use both,for me the best way to do do the prep work before the shaping.

Thanks. It fits really well. I wanted to do one out of the same wood as the handle (Thuya burl), but don't have pockets that deep! The wood was just some white pine I picked up at Home Depot, which is actually the correct wood to use because of how soft it is. I was going to sink a magnet in it, but really no need. The friction holds it on nicely.

I'd love to see your take on one! All lignum with some ivory in there somewhere? :rofl2:
