The EXACTO Bullet

I don't follow shooting developments much any more but a friend just emailed me a heads up on the EXACTO bullet developed by DARPA. I guess if you live long enough you get to see a few I'll be damned class developments. If this becomes commercially available it could take all the fun out of target shooting.

Aerodynamically according to the brief write-up. I don't know why they need this after they developed the gun that one designates the target by pulling the trigger but then the weapon waits to fire until you have it aimed for the correct solution.

If this bullet doesn't have an optical seeker, someone will have to keep an aiming device aimed accurately at the target for the whole flight of the projectile. Doesn't seem like it makes a difficult shot any easier...

I call B.S. Steering something that is rotating super fast, for stabilization in flight, doesn't seem possible due to the extreme g-force involved with the rotation alone.

The sighting system is possible, but I checked on them and they cost as much as a barret semi-auto 50 cal...I checked.

Really?

It will most likely be a miniature version of the Copperhead laser guided munitions that the ARMY used to have. Not sure if they still use them as technology has jumped by leaps and bounds since I was in the service.

Call BS if you want. The 155 rounds are not shot from a smooth bore. There is no centrifugal force from the rotation if the circuitry is aligned with the axis of rotation. Besides that is miniscule compared to the G of firing the damn thing. They have already mastered having a computer that can survive 50K G acceleration, boot up between the primer being struck and exiting the muzzle and having a GPS fix. The only challenge I see here is the miniaturization. Beyond that, who is worth the $500,000 bullet on a battlefield?
