Man! Did he have it running? I suppose a flat-head?
That was when a Stude, was a Stude!
All I have ever encountered were ridiculously overbuilt.
Studebakers were good cars.

I had an old Ford with that sort of overdrive.
If you pulled a knob, it would clunk-in. But then, there was no engine-braking.
Was all coast! You would clutch and push the knob in as you approached a slowdown.
What the peuter does now! ;)
My father was a die hard Studebaker fan. He always drove one. They were always ahead of the pack in the styling dept. and had these advanced features way ahead of their time.
What did them in was first they came out with this model called the "Scotsman" which was a quality vehicle but devoid of all chrome or fancy stuff inside and out. It was never a hit with the public but there were a lot of taxis using it and then the Scottish Community didn't like the cheap/Scot image.
Then they decided what people really wanted was a cheap car that looked expensive so they came out with the "Lark" which was an ugly square box but full of fancy chrome and a nice interior but the car was a piece of junk but they sold really well and then they started having all kinds of issues with them and that spelled the end of them.
I confess...I have a 50 Stude Pickup on a 79 Chevy 'Heavy Half' frame.....Cadillac 480 built to snot.
Some day?...
