When at a box store nursery, when looking for a tree to bonsai. Is there a good quick way to look st the nebari other than squeezing the sided of the plastic pot to push the tree up and removing the top 1/2" of soil?

Not sure which box your shopping at but,,,,Home Depot has a garden buyer in each store. They wear an apron like the rest of them but all you have to do is ask who it is and when they are in. Usually morning shifts. They should be more than happy to help you find what your looking for and even order it from their vendor. If not, get me a name and store number and you will get better customer service than you ever imagined :<0)
What type of trees you looking at getting?
the Jacaranda is beautiful! would love to have one in the office..

A lot of Japanese maple are grafted, try and avoid them. They never look right.
