All Australian Bank notes are polymer now (have been since about 1988 I think) and you do get used to them. A new $5 note was introduced recently with raised dots (braille) to help the visually impaired identify the denomination this will be incorporated into all new issues. With the current exchange rate any bank should be able to supply "Aussie Dollars" at a decent rate.

I personally found the US bills confusing due to similar colour and size but got used to them pretty quick too.
