    Default In the Garden 2022

    I couldn't find where anyone had started a new gardening thread. If there is one please let me know and I'll post there.

    Last fall I planted some garlic and I believe that it was time to harvest as they fell over as do onions. Here they are hanging in my garage. I've got a fan on them for air circulation.

    I planted a new Post to attach a section of Deer Fence, the snow took it out this winter,, yesterday was the hottest day of the year 69° lol

    We might hit 70° by next Fri

    We shall see what happens this season hehehe

    Well first and foremost, my garlic experiment seems to be going well--

    I'm also playing with growing some 'Hatch Peppers'. I don't have any experience with them. I don't know if the plants will get bigger or what. With the weather as foul as it was they had actually started growing peppers inside! I got them planted but they didn't look very good, some leaves dropped off and the color isn't very green yet. We'll see---So far there are 5 peppers between the two plants----Anyone got any experience growing peppers???

    Seems that there will be WW Sweet Onion Seed for planting this year---

    Most WW Sweets are 'Doubles' so you usually get two stalks of seeds.

    Well the last I looked it was 105 F here today. My tomato plants are going full throttle with the blooms. As can be seen here.

    Here is the main garden patch. To the right, against the back fence, is three rows of tobacco. The back two rows are older, and are Connecticut Shade, Connecticut Broadleaf, and Criollo 98. Then there is a third row to the front, all Habano 2000, just planted out a couple weeks ago. More to the front is Bantam Yellow Sweet Corn, Emerald Spineless Okra, and right underfoot just sprouted up, Bok Choy. Elsewhere I have raised beds with tomatoes which aren't doing so well, jalapenos which gave me quite a few peppers, New Mexico chilis which have only given me two good peppers so far, more okra which has given us a few meals of okra, and a few other things that didn't work out so well. This winter I will haul in some more compost and expand the main garden another 10 feet, doubling it to 20 x 50. Half will be planted in tobacco, half in veggies. The soil on this property sucks so I bring in pickup truck loads of garden soil and shovel it right on top. I also built two walled raised beds but they drain so well that plants in them are always thirsty if we go a day or two without any rain.

    Here is a closeup of the South end. You can see a couple of leaves going yellowish. Those are ripe and ready to pick. I picked about 3 lbs green weight of tobacco this morning, probably a pound dry weight, that will make good cigar filler. I hope to get a few decent binder and wrapper leaves from the next priming. (cutting.)

    Yes , but not hatch peppers or as I've always called them Anaheim chilis. I used to grow a lot of the extra hot chilis for hot sauce. Mine were all habaneros, scotch bonnets, savinas, datils, Thai and tobasco.

    These are all vigorous growers and love lots of sun. They also like lots of water but must be well drained. Also I found they like a lot of nitrogen so I used chicken manure, just make sure to either get processed chicken manure or cut it with sandy soil like my grandmother used to do.

    I find using fish as fertilizer worked best for my peppers. Well...whole garden, actually.

    I had plants over 3 feet tall, peppers so big that the plants had to be tied to stakes, like tomatoes.

    Here in the South of the UK, my garden is basically toast. No rain for months, even the trees are dying.
