Mcbladescar, Did you have any specific questions about selfbows? I kind of rushed my response yesterday because I was at work. I have never made one but can answer some questions about types of wood, design, resources. Having someone local that can help you get started would be a big advantage. I'll try to post a pic of my bows today.

Just finished putting my bow together, after the damage I did months ago on a dry fire. Took it to the range this morning & was a 10" off at 12 yards,,,,, gross adjustments on the front sight & "peep" provided little correction.
I have always hated the peep sight & believe it to be the "weakest" part of the compound system. It has moved on me several times over the past 4 years, needing correction. I caught myself today changing my anchor point to find sight alignment between the peep & the front sight.
After a while , I started sighting over the peep , not using it, keeping my anchor as intack as I could, good shots developed. So I pulled the peep out of the string on the line & shot without it. Good shots at 15 & 20 yards.
So the questions are ,,,, does anybody shoot a compound hunting bow without a peep? If so, are the shoots effected at greater yardage,,, over 20 yards? Will a consistent anchor point & the front post alone,,, keep me in the game, say at 50 yards.
Thanks guys,,,,,
John, sounds like you're moving towards barebow shootin'. You'll be buying a longbow next. :p
You may be closer to reality than you think,,,,,,,
I spent the last 2 months working on my compound.
The Mongols are rolling over in their graves laughing at me right now,,,,,
Mate, I shoot off my thumb. The only work I do on my bow is dust it. :)
Is there a picture of your bow in this thread?
Nahh, but it's this kind of thing . They all look quite similar whether horn composite or modern materials.

It looks like they shoot off the opposite side of the bow for a right handed person,,, my arrow shaft comes off the riser on the left side of the bow ????
Poachers use no peep for low light situations! LOL
My Olympic recurve uses no peep. It makes your anchor point MUCH more critical. I find many in disagreement with me but I align the string with the back of the riser. It fits my face shape better. And riser design. At least for now. I am open for change!:D
The power was out at my local range this afternoon. I had lots of fun playing with a flashlight before it came back on. It amazes me how I had to change the sight depending if the light was coming from the right or left with my flashlight. I should go out and unplug it now because it will put my truck in a low battery warning by morning. :rofl2:
If you are going to shoot alligators in the dark get rid of the peep!
