Thread: A suit

let's face it, SR shaving is (in part) about being manly

so, i need some man-wisdom here to help me pick out (or at least point me in the right direction towards) a good, conservative, suit

i'm interviewing for a military job, so conservative is important, and i need to demonstrate attention to detail, so... there's that

anyways...

opinions! i demand them!

The only advice i can think of is go somewhere that will takes your measurements and tailor the suit.

My father-in-law once told me that if you've got a dark blue suit coat,you're covered for every occasion that could come up.That's all I've ever had along with pants to match.Sometimes you choose to wear other pants that don't match(less formal).You can wear any dress shirt and tie you wish.

Navy blue or Charcoal grey two button suit (get it properly fitted and tailored), white shirt, rep stripe tie....about as conservative as it comes. Later you can wear it with different shirt and tie combos (after you get the job). Black or cordovan oxfords with a matching belt. Socks match the trouser color (always). Wear a simple unobtrusive watch, or don't wear one at all. No other jewelry, other than wedding ring. Done.

yes, the bottom button is never to be done up.

I don't know if they have Moores where you are, but they generally have very helpful staff and will likely have what you need.

Great advice. If you don't particularly care for red, blue or another solid tie will be fine too. Just don't get "loud" and you'll be covered. Personally, I'd choose the navy blue because it is literally appropriate for virtually any occasion that requires a suit.

Perfect advice right there. The only thing I have to add about the tie is look for boring, hence the basic red stripes. Take your pants along when you look for socks and match it as closely as possible. The idea is that when you show ankle/calf, no one will notice because it matches the pants.

A dark navy suit is the most versatile suit made, with dark grey coming in right behind it.

Right, but if you can't match the socks exactly, always go darker (socks than pants) rather than lighter.
