I use a combination of American Crew Grooming Cream and American Crew Pomade.
The grooming cream has a thick, sticky consistency that will really plaster your hair down if you use too much of it or by itself.
So I use about 40% grooming cream, 60% pomade, and mix them around very well in the palm of my hand before applying to my hair.
The result is medium hold, good texture, natural looking with good shine.
I fully recommend Royal Crown. They make a hair dressing which I use all the time. Their pomade is pretty hard to find but it's also good. It goes in easy and you can recomb it most of the day. The pomade gets a bit crunchier than the dressing though. It's cheap and good. Washes out a bit like the lighter hold Murray's which you might look into since you're familiar with the original. Royal Crown was also the choice for Johnny Cash, so there's your official endorsement. I rock a side part and nothing looks better, good shine good hold.
I've used Layrite pretty much exclusively for... a year? Same results as you. Later in the day I find I might need an extra dab if I comb my hair again. Water will cut down the potency really quickly and finding the perfect balance takes a few tries. But put it on dry hair and be prepared to accidentally lose some strands in the process. :cry:

Imperial Barbershop grade products has a water soluble pomade that holds very well and it washes right out. They also carry a gel pomade and a fiber pomade.
