Thanks for the post. I LOVE rum. Right now I consistently buy Appleton's Estate bottle. I actually like it better than the reserve.
For that quick cheaper swig I will do Bacardi Select.
Lots of info for rum lovers here: Welcome to the - Ministry of Rum
Ron Zacapa 15 and 23 are the two bottles I have open at the moment, they have their own character, the age difference makes a nice study in the effect of time in wood on rum.
I prefer whisky (Islay more than anything), but never say no to a good rum.Apart from the local rum (Arehucas), latest I tried was Diplomatico 12, very good but too sweet for my taste....(reminded me of Zacapa, actually)
I'm a a sctoch guy, myself (and a brandy/cognac FOOL), but I do like a nice sweet Rum now and again. If you haven't had it, the Ron Z. 23 year does lose some of that sickly sweetness. Next time you're in Connecticut (a bit north of New York City), I'll pour the first glass!
Sounds good, I'll let you know! Cigars and rum....a match I truly love to explore....as for women, any trip over there will likely be with my wife, so I think your women are safe!
I had some Ciclon for a while and I really enjoyed it.
Ciclon is a mix of rum and tequila.
Although Johnny Walker Black is my poison of choice.
well guys thank you for all the replies, i really enjoy the reading and now i will be on a hunt for good rum. has anyone tried the 10 cane rum yet
anyone sample angostura 1919 yet
Matusalem is really good. So is Pyrat. If you can find them older they are even better.
Iffen you want a pretty rugged rum, try Bundaberg Rum, it is pretty raw and made in Queensland, Australia. I used to drink lots of it when I was a young Jackaroo, you either cry of fight when you get a gut full of this stuff. Best drunk neat from a tin pannikan around a fire whilst leaning back on your stock saddle !!
Cheers all
PS am about to try some Appeleton Estate rum, looks good.
cachaca! love that stuff. I have some venezuelan rum wrapped up in leather I like too. Can't remember the brand.
So, my rum selection is nice and varied at times, and have sampled more rums from around the world than i can count. I currently stock a bottle of Pyrat rum, a bottle of 10 Cane, along with Capt Morgan Spiced, and once in a while Capt Morgan Private. All very good, all different. In love with the Pyrat and 10 Canes. Once upon a time I had a jigger of Bundaberg while in Darwin. Holy cow, that was some rough stuff to drink. but it refilled my zippo like a champ.
I'm not a big Rum-bo drinker, but I have tried a few, Capt Morgans is a favourite of mine, Bundaberg (Bundy) rum is a bit rough, but it does come in a few different varieties these days and the newer ones are an improvement over the original stuff. Bundy Red is smooth and aimed at stealing away Bourbon drinkers. Bundy Reserve is just plain smoooooth. Never tried the OP stuff, too scared! As Heelaroo said, you either cry or fight with a gutful of Bundy and I don't wanna risk being a cry baby...:D
Mick
Yep, rum drinker. Usually Capt Morgan, or what ever is cheapest. hehe.
I'll have a rum and coke as soon as I get home from work....
Mount Gay and Gosling's Black Seal
are my Rums of choice
Ever had a Dark 'n' Stormy?
Ginger Beer (not ale) and Black Rum
(my favorite mixed drink)
+1 to Gosling's
and the Dark and Stormy but I also like it on a rock
I keep a handle of the light Cruzan on hand at all times It has a little more to it than Ronnie B and works well in all the standards.
We have a large planter filled with Mint for the summer time, I make a pretty mean Mojito.
While Cachaça is a cane liquor its made differently than Rum.
I have attached my favorite brand and method of using it.
The best rum for me is Zacapa.
I have an old 27yo and a 23yo at home. Not tasted yet the XO (centenario) which is considered the best of all.
It is a ”grassy” rum, full of wood and spice senses, very warm aftertaste but a little too sweaty. It’s ok for my taste, but I could understand someone who finds it excessively sweet.
I still consider this rum as one of the best in the world.
I spent a week in Bermuda a couple of years ago with some friends. Seemed it was 'Dark & Stormy' most days. :)
I like the Goslings alot. But, I also enjoy Havana Club and Brugal. Bacardi white is always available for everyday mixed drinks.
A nice spiced rum that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Sailor Jerry. It has a nice flavor without being over-the-top sickly sweet and has a great price point.
Another nice rum IMO is Old New Orleans Amber.
+1 for Pyrat
Great idea btw for a thread.
Eric
I'm a big fan of sweet dark rums, the sweetness keeps me from enjoying too much at once ;) I like stuff like Pyrat, Brugal Centennial and Legendario 7. Though not in the same exact flavour range, I also enjoy El Dorado 25 and Zaya Gran Reserva.
I typically like dark rums, but my cousin got me on Sailor Jerry a while back. It's pretty smooth for an over-proof rum :)
Reading Jerry's story and seeing his photo is how I picture SRP's Jimmy(HAD).... tattooed (and a tattoo artist), pipe in mouth, glass of fine rum! I've never met you Jimmy, so I have to use my imagination :rofl2: Besides, Sailor Jerry seemed like the straight razor type....
Appleton Gold, or "Special" not the Estate. From Jamaica Mon. Brugal, Dominican I think and 10 Cane from Trinidad. Stubbs from the land down under if you want to get really "****ed" :)
MIke
In my mind, there isn't a better spiced rum than Sailor Jerry's. 'tis the season to put a splash or two in your egg nog, after all ;) haha
I most certainly will, it seems to be one that people frequently rave about being great. I think I have seen it in stores here before, but never picked any up because it was an in-out type of trip for some beer. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. Is it more of a punchy (tart) type of sweet rum, or a smoother kind of tangy sweet? I like both, they both have their place, but I'm trying to imagine the flavour.
I have a few bottles open now:
Appleton Estate Extra 12yr (my all time favorite so far...)
Goslings Black Seal (Dark and Stormy Rum!)
Flor de Caña gran reserve (Great rum for the money)
Myer's Legend 10yr (not bad)
I also like Pusser's with lime on occasion though I don't have that on the bar ATM.
I like darker rums with molasses notes in them more. It's been a while, but I do remember liking 10 cane even though it is a light rum.
-Rum
Hi,
Woods 100, Pussers & Mount Gay are my favourite rums :)
The Pussers 15 year old is superb, but scalpingly expensive in the UK at ca 40 GBP (ca 60 USD).
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
Hi Mick;
Stubbs Rum is excellent. Very smooth clean rum. It mixes well with tonic and limes. We used to get the white version around here years ago then the local importer quit bringing it in. It’s very similar to the CJ Wray distillery in Jamaica, clean dry white rum. It’s a lower alcohol volume than say Vodka or Gin for tonics. I know my tastes have changed over the years. I can’t hit the boozer like I used to. All things in moderation, yada ,yada.
Mike
:beer2:
Captain Morgan & Sailor Jerry are both very good friends of mine, Thank You !
You want some good rum (or in this case rhum made from sugar cane instead of molasses) go with -

It does get better with the 15 year but I'm waiting for that coming in.
Jim
Hands down its Flor de Cana a Nicaraguan rum. Especially the anejo. The rums of Panama are usually a good bet with Abuelo one of the tops. And when you see the prices for them in Central America, you'll understand why it was the go to liquor for the British Navy.
The pipe "Up Spirits" and even rarer "Splice the Mainbrace" has not been heard on RCN ships for about 45 years. It was a sad day when we buried the rum and tots disappeared. I believe the RN buried the rum around the same time.
Bob
I'm not much into rums but whenever i need a bottle it'll be Angostura 1919.
If I do take a drink of rum it most likely would be Lambs Navy. I like the dark and dirty stuff not the lighter rums. Old habits I guess.
Bob
Yeah Lamb's Navy Rum. I did a two month tour in Gibraltar on a wreck removal job. Once in a while we'd get the chance to go ashore and we'd invariably celebrate with a shot of Lamb's. It's rough and unpretentious and I like that. Gibraltar has no VAT tax and I should have brought a bottle or two home, the price was right.
