You know what, we did. It'd been a full year since I had any down time. I REALLY needed it.
Great Smokey Mountain National Park is absolutely beautiful. We drove from Gatlinburg to Cherokee on a winding mountain road with beautiful streams alongside almost all the way along. It was spectacular! I only wish we'd have rented a mountainside cabin. The area is extremely commercial but if you get out into the country its really serene. I highly recommend it.
By all means, Take a fly rod :)
And if you are going to play Gatlinburg Golf Course, be prepared for a beating :)
In my life I have hiked great expanses of the Appalachian Trail. The Great Smokey Mountain National Park IS absolutely beautiful!! I have spent some time there and love it there too!
As for the area being comercial... almost (I said almost lol) all of America's geographic wonders are exploited and "commercialized." Especially when viewed via Canadian Eyes. "Remoteness" is something I really miss about Canada.
