Not necessary, really, just a cosmetic thing, but if you want your pipes to shine, treat 'em with carnauba wax every now and then.

PS: You're right Sailor, I've never seen a poor smoking pipe smoke any better as a result of being shined up or a good smoking pipe smoke any worse for not being shiny.
Been a crazy few weeks for me so i've been fairly out of touch, but seems like you gents have enjoyed quite a few great bowls of toby.
