Welcome Newbie... One thing that I would say is... If you're going to smoke cherry.... Find a pipe for it... My experence is it will ghost everthing it comes in contact with... A cob would be in order for a cherry blend... :)

I'm a cherry fan myself, but I have other pipes to use for anthing else I may like to try for that very reason. You should own a cob though. Every pipes smoker should have one imho :).
This forum has a lot of useful information on various pipe topics http://forum.pipes.org/discus/discus.cgi

I actually smoked one of my cobs while turning fly rod parts on the lathe the other day. My MO Meers have kind of gravitated to the shop and have become my shop pipes. Cob pipes are simple but they are their own built in filter and mine are great smokers. I really like smoking my cobs.
I'm sure its possible but even though I tend to neglect and abuse my cobs I have never had one go sour on me.
Yes I am brand loyal when it comes to cobs I have to support my local Missouri Meerschaum pipe makers.;)
ray, if it makes you feel better, i to am brand loyal love my MM cobs, and considering that i dont think anyone else in the country makes them, i have no choice, now when are you gonna get with dr dave and get a forever bit for your cobs
Zakatk, +1 on the MM cobs. You can find Missouri Meershams here (link) on the net. A BIG plus one on getting a Forever stem from Dave at Walker Briar Works (link to his site). You can even order the MM cob directly from Dave and get the stem made for it at the same time. His stems turn these inexpensive cobs into real fine smokers. For the money, it will be easy for you to dedicate certain pipes to certain blends, especially if the flavor tends to "ghost".
Enjoy!

Monday morning with Les Wood
Mine has started with some Boswell's Dans Va in a straight apple meershaum, coffee on the side/
I was going back through this tread and noticed that I started posting on page 37... We have come along ways sence then...
Smoke of the day:
Pipe: MM Legend w/Forever Stem in Orange Cream/This is going to be my VA/VaPer pipe
Tobacco: Capstan Navy Flake
Pipe Tool: Buck Solo
Lighting: Matches
You serious pipe guys are probably gong to shoot me for this but. One of the reasons I like the cobs for a "shop pipe" is that when I am bent over a machine working I can bite down a bit on the soft plastic stem and it not go anywhere. To me that's part of what makes them a good work pipe. I don't totally chew them up but my cobs definitely have tooth marks on them.
The forever stems are a good idea and I do like the way they make a cob pipe look. It is amazing how much a stem can make a difference in the aesthetics of a pipe.
A little help for a novice, just how many flavor groupings are needed? Will a salt/alcohol treatment knock out the past flavors?
Right now here's what I have
Billiard: English (Frog Morton OTT)
Canadian: aromatic cavendish
Cheap meerschaum: aromatic cavendish
I'm getting some Bob's Chocolate Flake today in the mail and was going to put that in the no-name. Does meerschaum ghost flavors?
