Smart guys are trying out new crops (like spuds for booze) but nothing much except dope gives a return per acre like tobacco did.
NC now has a burgeoning organic farming community, vineyards, specialty crops, etc. to try to replace tobacco.
I think big farmers will come out OK and small farmers are screwed if they're not lucky, efficient, hard-working and creative.
I hope I explained this correctly, in brief. Any growers out there who know better, please criticize my summary without reservations.
*It has been said a Carolina tobacco growers most profitable piece of farm equipment was his mailbox. A tobacco season was usually profitable, very hard work and short. Farmers used to work their butts off, sell their crop, make a bundle and go on welfare until the next spring. The only thing farmers have for sure now is working their butts off.
