Just had a huge thunderstorm for two days but it's over now. Warm silent evening so just sitting on my backyard. Reading (re-reading) Susimessu (A ceremony of wolves). History of the civil war in Finnish-Swedish empire in 1598.
Known also as a 'War against Sigismund', a start in a series of wars that is known as a 60 year war between Sweden and Poland 1598-1660.
Smoking Larsen 1864 from HCA.

Oooooooooooooooooo... my first (and probably last) tin of Murray-era Durbar. Been saving it for years - no idea why. When I started calling it "My Precious" I knew it was past time to crack the lid.

Smoked through a favored english-dedicated Brakner 1200AX it kills. I bought this years after Dunhill blends had vanished from US shelves; given the Murray-era label is stick-on, not screened on, I suppose this tin is about six years old. The tin was not rusted and the tobacco hadn't dried out so it's perfect from the tin. The latakia is especially punchy and not what I'd call particularly sweet; the distant virginias are decidedly piquant. This is a deep, rich english smoke that reminds me of a less-muddled Gawith & Hoggarth Balkan Mixture with latakia far forward. It is not a pussyfooting blend. This would be best smoked at a gentleman's club on Thursday night after lamb chops with mint jelly, mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce. Espresso. Chocolate pudding.
Good news, MrMoo:
Dunhill recently took 2 old blends back into selection: Durbar and Apéritif. Happened to notice at the local store so i picked one of each. Haven't tried either yet but i remember trying Apétif back so many years ago. Lot of latakia if i remember correctly. Not bad.
Last year or so Dunhill took back Elisabethan mixture. Haven't tried as perique isn't my sort of thing.
Gentleman's club would be great. Luckily there is still one pub in the city where smoking is allowed. Several private pipe & cigar clubs but they are upon invitation only. Guess you need to be a banker, lawyer, politician or admiral to get one.
Sort of good news. As an Eliza Mixture lover I bought 60-80 tins of the Murray-era version (stupid-cheap, taxfree) in Bermuda after it vanished from US shelves. I'll be busy with that for a few more years. ;) I tried the new version; prefer to finish off the old stuff first.
Have not yet tried the new Apéritif.
I am very happy to say last years new Dunhill (virginia) Flake is spectacular out the tin and should age brilliantly.
