starter pipe

there are some great video`s on youtube about cleaning your pipe after you smoke it. looks like most guys clean after each use, just let it cool before taking the stem out. one video the gentleman uses pipe cleaners and q-tips and recomends only taking it apart after 5 or 6 smokes. check them out.

Get the Czech 3-in 1 pipe tool and get a few of them - they are cheap and easy to loose.

Get both bristled and no bristled pipe cleaners. I use rum to clean my pipes when they need it. But you could use Everclear, bourbon or vodka.

Is there any specific protocol as to when and why to use bristled vs. non bristled cleaners?

Filters are only for pipes designed to hold filters, otherwise there is no place to put one. In pipes designed for filters, you can use a "dummy plug" (That's what I call it, I don't know what it's actually called) instead if you prefer unfiltered.

Use bristled when you are using a pipe sweetener or rum to act as a solvent. Put a few drops on the bristles ( only a little is needed) and then use the bristles to srub out the gunk. After, use a clean non bristled cleaner.

Again, there is a dubinthedam video on youtube that shows how to do a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning.

I would also add some kind of a pouch or bag if you intend to travel with your pipe. If not, you can skip it.

Yes! I've already been eyeing up Vauen pipes... :D

Not sure if this is too late, but I totally agree with Holli4pirating...a good basket pipe from a local smoke shop will only run you $20-$30.

This is a safe bet because pipes aren't for everyone and if you decide you don't like it it's not as big a deal as finding out after purchasing an expensive pipe. Dr. Grabow's aren't bad, but if you go to a local smoke shop you can talk with an experienced smoker (hopefully at least) who will help you get an idea as to what pipe would be better for you and what tobacco to pick out.

I have several savinellis, and would definitely recommend them to a beginner; they're a good, economical choice for a great smoke! :)
